The purpose of consulting independent external assessors is to indicate to the Committee how the candidate’s standing in the academic community has made an impact outside their immediate circle. It follows, therefore, that it is not in the candidate’s interest to nominate independent external assessors who are too close to the candidate, for example ex-supervisors, collaborators or co-authors, or anyone who has recently had a direct involvement with him/her.
The Head of School/ Research Institute Director/Faculty Research Director should aim for a selection of independent external assessors who will provide the committee with a balanced view across the full range of the individual’s work and the case for promotion.
It may be that some of the independent external assessors are based outside the United Kingdom especially where the case is being made for international distinction. All independent external assessors should be external to Keele[1] and hold a Professorial title.

Nominations for referees are as follows:

Promotion / Minimum number of assessors
nominated in each case from: / Minimum number to be contacted / Minimum number normally required for decision
