Applications are invited for the above posts within General Medicine based in Southern General Hospital Glasgow. Candidates would preferably in possession of MRCP part 1 (UK) or equivalent and have appropriate experience in General Medicine. Post is available from as soon as possible until 5th August 2014.

This post holds Educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will be a Locum Appointments for Training or Clinical Fellow dependant on experience. If appointed as a Clinical Fellow the post will not be recognised for training.

To practice medicine in the UK you need to hold both GMC registration and a licence to practice.

There may be a possibility to extend this appointment to the end of the training year. The extension may be at any of the hospitals on the rotation

2.Acute Services Division, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland – offering many opportunities to ensure job satisfaction and career development.

We provide a wide range of services from community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.

There is a significant amount of complex surgical work carried out, as we are home to a number of the country’s tertiary and national services including heart and renal transplantation and cardiothoracic surgery.

We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the £15 million, state of the art, WolfsonMedicalSchool, based at GlasgowUniversity adjacent to the Western Infirmary site.

3. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde brings together all acute services across the city and Clyde under a single management structure led by the Chief Operating Officer. 4. Southside Hospitals

Services are currently provided from two main acute hospitals - the Southern General Hospital, which serves the south-west of the city and is also home to the regional and tertiary services, and the Victoria Infirmary, which provides acute care for the south-east of the city. Two smaller hospitals – the Mansionhouse Unit and Mearnskirk Housedeliver mainly rehabilitation and elderly care services.

The Victoria Infirmary

The Victoria Infirmary is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 350. The hospital is situated in the south-east of Glasgow providing a range of high quality health care services including Accident and Emergency, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation, and Day Services), Orthopaedics and a wide range of Out-Patient clinics.

Clinical Services

The range of services provided by the Department of Medicine includes the sub-specialties of Cardiology, Rheumatology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastro-Enterology, Diabetes, and Endocrinology and Dermatology. The General Surgical Services include an eight-bed High Dependency Unit. Medicine for the Elderly Services includes Movement Disorders and Falls Specialties.

The above services are supported by other consultant-based services which incorporate diagnostic and clinical components including Anaesthetics, Laboratory Medicine, and Radiology. There is also available a wide range of therapeutic services which include Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, and Speech & Language Therapy.

Education

Facilities for Education and Personal Development include the Postgraduate Education Centre, the James Bridie Library, the Ebenezer Duncan Lecture Theatre and Seminar Rooms with a reception area. The Lecture Theatre has comprehensive audio-visual facilities. There is a Postgraduate Tutor, Postgraduate Secretary and Librarian on site.

Mansionhouse Unit

The Mansionhouse Unit is located close to the Victoria Infirmary and accommodates 240 elderly patients for Medicine for the Elderly assessment, stroke rehabilitation, rehabilitation, and continuing care as well as housing the Medicine for the ElderlyDayHospital.

Mearnskirk House

Mearnskirk House in Newton Mearns is a purpose-built 72-bed facility providing continuing care for the elderly.

Partnership Beds

There are 116 NHS- funded partnership beds in two private Nursing Homes in Rutherglen and Darnley for the care of elderly people.

University Links

Both the Southern General Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary have built a sound academic and research base over the years, and have an excellent teaching reputation with libraries and lecture suites with comprehensive audio/visual facilities on both sites. There are close links with the University of Glasgow's Faculty of Medicine including Professors within Neurosciences.

The Southern GeneralHospital

The Southern General Hospital is a large teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 930 beds. The Hospital is sited in the south-west of Glasgow and provides a comprehensive range of acute and related clinical services.

Services include Accident and Emergency, Dermatology, ENT, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitationand Day Services), Gynaecology, Neonatal Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Physically Disabled Rehabilitation and Continuing Care. The Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Urology and Ophthalmology Departments provide the single in-patient location for the whole population of South Glasgow. In-patient Maxillofacial (trauma and elective surgery and specialist provision for head and neck cancer), Dermatology and the Assessment and Rehabilitation service for the Physically Disabled are also provided for the whole city from the Southern General Hospital.

There is also a wide range of therapeutic services including Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, Radiology (including MRI and CT provision for the general hospital service) and Speech Therapy.

The Institute of Neurological Sciences

The Institute of Neurological Sciences is based on the Southern General campus and provides Neurosurgical, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuroradiological and Neuropathology facilities for the West of Scotland.

WESTMARC

The Westmarc Unit houses the clinical services for prosthetics and orthotics, including the Artificial Limb and Appliance Centre, within a purpose-built facility. The centre is staffed jointly by hospital and university personnel from the National Centre for Training in Prosthetics and Orthotics of Strathclyde University.

Podiatry

The Department of Podiatry has a purpose-built 24-chair clinic and a minor procedure theatre.

Spinal Injuries Unit

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Unit for Scotland provides a spinal injuries service to the whole of Scotland. This is housed in a purpose-built facility.

Education

There is a long tradition of training medical students and the Southern General is one of the principal teaching hospitals in Glasgow.. There is also a Library with a Learn Direct E-Learning Centre.

6. Work of the Department

The Medical Directorate at the Southern General Hospital has 121 beds. There are 17 Consultant Physicians, with the following interests;- Cardiology (3), Gastro-enterology (3), Respiratory Medicine (4), Diabetes/Endocrinology (4), Rheumatology (3).

The Consultant Physicians at the Southern General Hospital, provide integrated outpatient, inpatient and daycase investigation services for the population of south west Glasgow ( approximately 250,000 ) where more than 5,683 new out-patientsare seen each year.

Both out-patient and in-patient duties are supported by the Allied Health Professions and multi-disciplinary working is a key feature of both services.

(c )Duties of the Post:

This post is based on a four[d1] month period. The postholder will participate in acute medical receiving and also form part of the General Medical team looking after Wards and attending Out-patient clinics.

(i)Acute Medical Services

Acute Medicine

The Consultants at the Southern General undertake general medical receiving on a 1:12 rota. The Consultant is responsible for the assessment and admission of referrals on a “physician of the week” system, which involves twice daily ward rounds on the Acute Receiving Unit, (Ward 20) on a Monday to Thursday and Friday to Sunday rota. There is an overnight on-call rota, which is shared amongst the 12 Consultants undertaking medical receiving, and there is a separate Cardiology/CCU on-call rota. Patients requiring ongoing patient care remain under the physician of the week’s care on the receiving unit until transferred to a colleague in another specialty. A 10 bedded Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) has recently opened and patients are admitted to this facility directly from the Accident and Emergency department. Consultants in General Medicine also provide a ward visit service on Saturday & Sunday mornings on a 1 in 12 rota.
