B. Creative Work: Writing a dialogue

Imagine the dialogue between the tramp and Fin’s father just before Fin arrived. We do not know what they were talking about so you’ll have to use your imagination. Is it connected with Ella’s disappearance? Remember that it seems that Mr Parnell knows him – think about how he might know him.

Set your dialogue out as follows:

MR PARNELL:[ angrily ] What do you want? I told you not to come here! [He moves away from the tramp but the tramp calls after him.]

TRAMP:[raising his voice] You can’t tell me what to do. It’s a free country. Anyway, if you’re not careful I’ll tell …..

Note down the rules from the above dialogue thinking about how to present your dialogue.

When you write a dialogue think about the following:

  1. Contractions:

Full Form / Contraction / Full Form / Contraction
I am / They are
I should have / He is not
You had better / She will not
You will / They cannot
We are / He did not
  1. Use of question tags

Example: You wouldn’t do that, would you?
i) He won’t harm her,
ii) She will come back,
iii) Sammy is scared,
iv) I’m to blame,
v) We should pay the money,
vi) Let’s go,
vii) She’s gone missing,
viii) He took her,
ix) I can’t believe what’s happened,

What is the rule?

  1. Use of fillers and exclamations:

What!How dare you!This is unacceptable!

Oh!But …What on earth!

Err…Oh no!

IndeedWhat do you mean?

Can you think of any others?
