Course Description and Content:

The Ceramics and Sculpture course is intended to give a basic, broad understanding of the elements and principles of design and their relation to three-dimensional objects. The class focus will be on purposeful decision making in various mediums. The ceramics projects will include hand building techniques, an introduction to the wheel, the basic theories of clays and glazes, and the exploration of firing techniques. The sculpture projects will include using found objects in design, sculpture for purpose, altering materials, and working with various materials. In addition to the technical processes, there will be a strong emphasis on the development of a personal artistic vision or viewpoint as the course unfolds.

Students may wish to bring in other tools for working with wood, wire and found objects as they see fit. Students are expected to use the materials appropriately and return them to the teacher. If a student damages materials beyond further use or does not return materials to the teacher, the student will be responsible for paying for the materials.

Classroom Rules and Discipline Procedures:

Class and studio expectations will be reviewed the first week of school. Students are expected to uphold all school and county rules found in the Henry County Schools Student Handbook. Upon an infraction of any rule, the handbook steps for the offense will be followed. Classroom detention may be assigned. All students will be expected to be prepared, be punctual, be polite, respect others and respect materials.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are NOT permitted to have food items in class as it may damage artwork and is against school policy. Students are also only permitted to use technology for educational purposes. Students found using electronic items inappropriately will receive disciplinary action.

Homework:

Students will be required to complete homework assignments in the sketchbook they purchase for class. Due dates will be given in class, as well as assignment instructions. Homework is to be turned in at the beginning of class. Homework that is turned in at the end of class will be considered late. Homework assignments are an important part to the art course, therefore students will receive 5 points off of their homework grade for each day it is late.

Make-up Policies:

Students have one day per absence to make up their missing work. All projects must be shown on critique day and opportunities may be given to allow work to be continued or re-worked in special instances. Students are welcome to make an appointment to stay after school for studio time. If students do not make arrangements to make up studio time and/or miss critiques they may have points subtracted daily for unexcused late work.

The Grading System and Assessment for Learning:

53% Summative Assessments (Art Projects, Tests)

47% Formative Assessments (Homework, Quizzes, Participation)

** 15% of the student’s final grade will come from the Semester Final

Assessment for learning will be demonstrated by solving the presented design problems by including the elements and principles of art. The students will be assessed by rubrics during in-class critiques. Assessment for learning materials, technique and methods will be given in the form of written assignments and tests.
