Course Description
This course deals with information technology as it applies to medical facilities. Managers need a basic understanding of MIS in order to define system requirements, make necessary selection of systems and components, oversee implementation, and assess results. Components to be covered include: communications, infrastructure, software systems, and security. Students will become familiar with medical management information systems from a managerial perspective.

Course Objectives/Outcomes:

• Understand the role of information technology in a medical facility

  • Understand the four major components of IT: communications, infrastructure, software systems, and security
  • Understand the importance of protecting information
  • Understand the importance of a Security Policy
  • Understand the importance of a Risk Analysis
  • Understand HIPAA Standards
  • Understand what is involved in selecting and deploying an information system

Required Textbooks:

None

Readings will be assigned during the course.

Materials:

Please bring a laptop computer to every class. A laptop with a microphone is required for the on-line sessions.

Course Requirements:

The objectives of the course will be met through a combination of readings, lectures, homework, group projects, presentations, and tests.

Readings :

You will be expected to read assigned material before you come to class. The lectures

are intended to supplement, reinforce and clarify - but not substitute - the assigned reading material.

Attendance:

Attendance is mandatory.

Homework:

The homework assignments are designed to give you experience with various issues related to Management Information Systems. Unless noted otherwise, homework will be individual efforts. Some homework projects may be designated as a Group Project. In that case, you will work with other individuals in your group to complete the designated task. Some of the homework will require a presentation. Late homework will not beaccepted.

Grade Distribution: Students will be awarded a grade according to the following scale:

A 90+%

B+ 87-89%

B 80-86%

C+77-79%

C 70-76%
