EXPERIENCE
GENERAL
Stephen Doggett is a Senior Hospital Scientist with the Department of Medical Entomology, ICPMR, at WestmeadHospital in Sydney. His research background in entomology is extremely broad having worked on and published articles relating to ticks and tick borne diseases, mosquito surveillance, mosquito borne diseases, biological control, vector competence, bird mites, and most recently, a series on bed bugs. His current position is the Manager of the New South Wales Mosquito Monitoring and Arbovirus Surveillance Program, which is funded by NSW Health. In this capacity, Stephen undertaken numerous research projects relating to mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease and published extensively on arbovirus activity within NSW. Stephen is responsible for the production for the Department’s web sites ( and is the Quality Manager for the Department, which has the only NATA accredited Medical Entomology pathology service in Australia and was the first entomological lab to be NATA accredited in Australia. Stephen is also well known for his insect photography, with many images appearing in nature, medical and entomological journals as well as newspapers and on the Department’s web sites.
Over the last five years, Stephen has been at the forefront of documenting the rise and impact of bed bugs within Australia, with results being published in Environmental Health, TheJournal of Economic Entomology and many industry based journals. Stephen is widely consulted on bed bugs and their control by the accommodation and pest control industries, and has given many lectures on bed bugs across Australia, as well as appearing on national and international television programs including Catalyst, A Current Affair, Today Tonight, Totally Wild and National Geographic. Over the last three years he has worked with an eminent group of pest managers and scientists in developing a Code of Practice for the Control of Bed Bugs, which is a world first. The Code was launched in July 2006 and has received international recognition by being adopted by the Italian and New Zealand Pest Control Industries.
Stephen regularly lecturers to various groups. This includes undergraduates, postgraduates, public health officers, medical doctors, community groups and other professional bodies. To date, he has authored/co-authored 95 publications, produced 46 reports for industry and health bodies, and presented over 100 lectures at conferences and meetings, and produced extensive training notes for various courses relating to Medical Entomology.
