This document includes information about the Step into Dance programme, gives you details of how to make an application as a freelance dance teacher and what the recruitment process will involve. It is important for you to read this information carefully before making an application.

About Step into Dance

Step into Dance is a fully inclusive partnership programme run by the Royal Academy of Dance and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation. The programme currently runs in200 secondary schools over all London Boroughs and Essex, including at least50 SEN schools.

The schools receive up to two hours ofextra curricula dance classes delivered weekly over the academic year focussing on developing technical, creative and performance skills. As a Freelance Dance Teacher, you will be asked to develop the programme in each school or schools allocated to you. The post will be part time, and how many schools you work in will depend upon your schedule and the style/s of dance you can teach. It is important to note that the majority of the classes take place after school between 1500 and 1700.Please indicate your weekly availabilityand dance style/s clearly in your Availability Sheet(see “Making an Application” below).

Making an Application

If you would like to make an application for a freelance teaching post please refer to the job description and person specification and then send your completed application form, Equal Opportunities monitoring form and Availability Sheet to the Human Resources Department at the Academy. Applications will also be accepted in the mail to the RAD’s main Battersea address, by e-mail or fax 020 7326 8060.

It would be helpful, but not mandatory, if as part of the application process, you are able to submit a DVD showing works that you have choreographed or include YouTube links.

All applications must be received by 1200 noon on the closing date Friday 20June 2014. CVs will only be accepted as supporting documentation with a completed application form.

Teaching Auditions will take place on Thursday, 17 July, Friday, 18 July – morning and afternoon session 10.00 – 12.45 and 14.00 – 16.30 and Tuesday, 22 July 2014 – morning and afternoon session 09.00 – 12.00 and 14.00 – 17.00.

You should be prepared to teach a short sequence (in your preferred style) to fellow applicants. You will be allowed 10 - 15 mins and should bring along your music (if you choose to use any) on CD. Conditions of Being Offered Engagement

There are four important conditions of being offered freelance employment as follows:

  1. References: All offers of employment are made subject to satisfactory references. Referees will be contacted in advance of an audition where a post involves direct contact with children or with vulnerable adults.
  1. HR Induction session: This will be delivered by the HR team on 1 September from 10.00 to 12.00 at the RAD Headquarters and all successful candidates will need to attend.
  1. Training Days: Successful candidates will be invited to FiveTraining Days on1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 September 2014 to be held at theAcademy’s Headquarters in Battersea. Attendance at these training days is mandatory – you will not be offered work if you have not participated.
  1. Criminal Records Screening: You should also be aware that if you are offered a position as a freelance dance teacher, the offer would be made subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (or other equivalent overseas body).

The Academy uses the services of an external Umbrella Body, a company called Due Diligence Checking Limited (DDC) which is able to process your DBS Enhanced Disclosure application for you.

You will not be able to start teaching unless you have a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as Criminal Records Bureau).

The RAD has a policy with regard to the employment of ex-offenders and any criminal record will only be taken into account if relevant to the post. The RAD is bound by the DBS’s Code of Practice for Registered bodies and has a policy for the secure storage, handling, use, retention and disposal of Disclosures and Disclosure information. Copies of the Code of Practice and relevant policies are available on request from the HR Department.

Successful candidates who are invited to the Induction Day are asked to bring original copies of theirDBS Disclosure. The HR representative will ask to see the document and take a note of the issue date.

3. Right to Work in the UK

The Royal Academy of Dance complies with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 which requires all prospective employees to provide documentary evidence of their legal right to work in the UK prior to commencing employment. Lists of the documents as required by the Home Office are available in the Academy’s document “Entitlement to Work and Study in the UK” available on the RAD website and sent to applicants who are short listed for interview.

Successful candidates who are invited to the HRInduction session are asked to bring original copies of their documentation. The HR Department will ask to see the documentation and will take a note of the documents seen.

Please note that offers of freelance employment will be made subject to the applicant providing documentary evidence of their legal right to work in the UK, in accordance with the Home Office documents lists. Offers of employment are subject to verification of the Right to Work status and failure to produce valid listed documents will result in an offer of employment being withdrawn.
