Job Description
Title: Graduate Assistant for STEM McNair Scholars Program
Length: Academic Year
Pay: Quarterly Tuition Waiver and Stipend
Time: 20 hours/week
The TRiO McNair Program at Eastern Washington University is currently accepting applications for an experienced leader and student-centered assistant to fill a multifaceted role as a McNair Graduate Assistant.
The nationwide TRiO Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program is funded by Congress through the Department of Education to prepare undergraduates who are first-generation and low-income, and/or from underrepresented backgrounds for success at the doctoral level. The McNair Scholar Program at Eastern Washington University was first funded in 1995. Eastern’s McNair program supports successful graduate studies by providing opportunities for undergraduates to define their goals, to engage in research, and to develop the skills and student/faculty mentor relationships critical to success at the doctoral level. Responsibilities include:
Recruiting:
- Disseminate TRIO McNair information in STEM Departments
- Assist with early identification for potential STEM and McNair scholars
- Develop a strong relationship with Faculty Mentors to identify students in early stages that would be able to apply to NSF
- Obtain STEM majors and potential eligible incoming transfer students list from Admissions
- Make contact with list
- Mass mailing of invitation
- Phone-a-thon
- Connect with any STEM related student organization(s) on campus (i.e. AISES)
- Connect and collaborate with institutions around EWU campus to increase the numbers of STEM students
- Advertise on STEM-Ronald E. McNairin website and Facebook
Program:
- Seek and encourage STEM McNair students to apply to Summer Research Internships and Provide High Demand scholarships for STEM students
- Create syllabus and teach STEM application process for NSF grants and Summer Research internships.
- Coordinate Pre-requisites & Registration assistance with STEM programs
- Appropriate departmental advising referrals
- Promote participation in STEM student and professional organizations
- Develop STEM resources on McNair website (i.e. STEM transfer guides, related campus services)
- Create a Database of STEM opportunities
- Collaborative STEM Scholars Seminar or Workshop Series with CSHE, Career Services, TRIO SSS and such…..
- Assist STEM students in Research Methodology-design and research writing.
- Create course syllabus and teach a STEM Research Design course on Spring
- Organize GRE subject study classes (as needed)
- Organize seminars with guest speakers from STEM fields
- Assist STEM students to apply graduate school
Monitoring Academic Progress and Evaluation
- Collect feedback and evaluation from a STEM McNair Scholar
- Quarterly academic performance reports from STEM Scholar
- Workshop Evaluations
- Intake Session during first two weeks of the quarter
- Monitor internships dateline and services provided

10 / Maintain the McNair Database and assist with documents for website and newsletter as means of communication and resource for students. / Yes
