STEM Extended Learning Lesson Plan
21st Century/JOM POUNCE
Academic Standards: 5.M.G.B.03, 5.M.G.B.04,
Navajo Culture Connection: Different structures on the Navajo Nation, Hogan’s, sweat lodge shapes.
Vocabulary: Square, Triangle, Rectangle, Pentagon, hexagon, Tetrahedron, pyramid, cube, prism,
Student Friendly Objective: I can make a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows by using different shapes.
STEM Career Connection (Anticipatory Set – emphasize how you will make this career a relevant possibility for students. How will you inspire them through this part of the lesson?): Civil engineering, Bridge building and structure building.
Activity Description: The spaghetti and marshmallow tower will test student’s design and building of a tower. They will be have time to design the structure first and then build it to their design. The team with the tallest tower will be the winners.
Students Do: / Teacher Does:I Do / Students will start off the lesson with paper and pencil to write notes on the different shapes and draw them according to there characteristics. / 15-20 minutes - Teacher will introduce the math lesson by telling the students about different shapes in the class room and the reasons for the shapes of the building and talk a little about the bridges and towers around the area. Then the teacher will start to draw and describe the shapes starting with a triangle. Then a square, rectangle, and pentagon, and a hexagon. Then the teacher will draw a cube, pyramid, prism, and a tetrahedron.
We Do / The students will pass out the spaghetti and marshmallows for the activity and start making the different shapes by using the materials and matching them with the ones they have drawn.
Then we will start the spaghetti and marshmallow tower. / 10-15 minutes - The teacher will let the students make different shapes using the spaghetti and marshmallows. Have them tell each other what shape and characteristics they have and write them down on paper. Then the teacher will divide them into groups of three- five in a team depending on how many students they have. The teacher will tell the students that they have 20-30 minutes to design with their team a tower and then have them build it to their design. The team with the tallest tower will win.
You Do / The students will then design their tower on paper using the different shapes they have learned and then they will start building the tower. / The teacher will walk around the classroom to help the students with question and see how they are building the towers. The teacher will measure the towers at the end of the allotted time.
Assessment: The paper with all the different shapes and characteristic and design for the tower.
Closure: Talk about the different style towers the students made and how it held up to the weight and height.
