Course Objectives:

One of the greatest differences between statistics and other mathematics courses is that statistical instruction takes on a variety of forms. Students in my Statistics course often work in groups to gather, analyze, and discuss conclusions drawn from data. Classroom discussion pertaining to statistical topics is encouraged as it is an integral part of developing an understanding of the methodology, practical application, and inferences drawn from the subject.

Statistics introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes, with appropriate emphasis given to each:

Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns

Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study

Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation

Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses

Statistics draws connections between all aspects of the statistical process, including design, analysis, and conclusions. Statistics teaches students how to communicate methods, results, and interpretations using the vocabulary of statistics. Class discussion is encouraged to develop students’ ability to communicate statistically.

Statistics teaches students how to use graphing calculators and demonstrates the use of computers and/or computer output to enhance the development of statistical understanding through exploring and analyzing data, assessing models, and performing simulations. Students will be required to complete several projects throughout the year. Students will be required to present the project with their group of loose credit.

Grading Policy:

Formative Assessments: Formative assessments make up 40% of their grade. Daily activities, practice, and quizzes will serve as their formative assessments. Formative assessments are intended to allow students to develop mastery over the material.

Summative Assessment: Summative assessments comprise 60% of a student’s grade. Summative assessments (tests) allow students to demonstrate mastery over the material, which may cover multiple concepts. Occasionally students may have projects in place of a test to demonstrate mastery.

Formative Assessments 40%

Summative Assessments (Tests)60%

●All assignments must have work shown as well as the answer to receive full credit.

●Each student must do their own work. Any form of plagiarism or supplying answers to others will result in disciplinary action and possible zero.

Retest Policy:

Students may retest ONE summative assessment within ONE week from the date the grade is posted or test returned. The retest will be awarded a grade no more than 80% of the retest grade or the average of the original test and the re-test, whichever will benefit the student more.

The requirements of retesting are as follows:

-all missing work must be completed and turned in prior to the reassessment

-attendance at tutorials is mandatory for re-teaching prior to the reassessment.

*Projects are excluded from the re-test policy, students will be notified when the project is assigned as a reminder.

Late Work and Retest Policies:

Students who have not turned in assignments by the due date may turn in the assignment for the credit listed in the table below: however, the teacher may require a student to complete the missing assignment during tutorials or complete an alternate assignment covering the same material.

Teachers may choose not to accept an assignment after the due date as long as the student is given the option to complete the assignment during tutorials or given an alternate (but comparable) assignment for the credit listed in the table below.

Students who have not turned in assignments by the due date may turn in the assignment for the credit listed in the table below:

Turned in up to 1 week after due date / Turned in 5 days or more after the Due Date, but prior to the end of 3 Weeks Grading Period / Turned in after the end of the 3 week progress report date
10 point reduction per day / 50% of Grade Earned / No credit will be given

Regardless of when an assignment is turned in, the assignment shall be graded by the teacher and appropriate feedback shall be given to the student. The grade on the paper shall include the actual grade earned and the grade with the late penalty applied. Completion grades may not be given.

Supplies Needed (EVERYDAY):

●Pencils

● Paper/spiral

●3 – ring binder/folder/something for student to stay organized

●Headphones/earbuds

Optional Supplies:

●Graph Paper

●Graphing Calculator (recommended)

●Tissue

Electronic Devices Policy:

Cell phones are allowed at certain times during instruction. Students will be informed when it is appropriate for them to use cell phones in class, verbally and by a sign on the board. If the student has their phone out without permission disciplinary action will be taken. Students will also have access to chrome books for instructional purposes in the classroom.

Canvas: (students should share their log-in with guardian)

A way to simplify teaching and learning by connecting all the digital tools teachers use in one easy place.

Some ways this will be used in our classroom:

  • Syllabus
  • Calendar
  • Assignments
  • Tutorial Videos
  • Collaboration
  • A place to turn in assignments
  • Other

Absences/Makeup Work:

Students will be expected to check Canvas when they are absent due to sickness or school event.

Each student is personally responsible for obtaining missed notes, assignments, quizzes, and/or tests due to an absence. If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, the assignment is due the day after the student returns to school unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. Students will not be reminded to turn in make-up work. Students should get assignments prior to an absence if they know that they will be gone.

Tutoring:

Tutoring is available during West Hour A Block on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students may seek help from other teachers if I am not available.

After school tutoring is also available on Tuesday until 3:15.

Mornings are only available for students to come in and work on chrome books individually, I will not be available tutoring/questions.
