Statistics Project 1
Every school year, Kentucky’s public schools are mandated by KRS 158.6453 to have juniors take the ACT, which assesses English, Reading, Mathematics and Science and is scored on a scale 1 to 36. In the file ACTData, I have included ACT scores from Pendleton County High School for three areas, English, Math and Reading. Usingthisdata, your group is going to look at each data set individually and then compare them to one another. This should be written as summary in a word processed document or PDF and is to be submitted electronically. Things that are required to be in the summary but does not need to be in this order:
- Graph each set of data.
- Determine the central tendency for each set of data and discuss if the data is skewed.
- Determine the variability for each set of data. (Range, variance, standard deviation)
- Calculate the intervalsfor each data setand discuss their distribution (The point here is to compare the values as a whole between each group. Does one perform better than the other? Is one group more consistent than the other?)
- Write at least three statements for each set of data using Chebyshev’s Rule based on the measures you found. (Ex. This should be something like, “At least 75% of all teenagers make between $8.25 and $9.15 per hour.”)
- Find the exact percentage of measurements in each data set that fall within each of the intervals: . Discuss if these percentages agree with either Chebyshev’s rule or the empirical rule.
- Find the “5-number summary” for each set of data, and use it to describe the distribution of your data. (Discuss about the lower, middle and upper quartile for each set.)
- Make side-by-side boxplots and use it to compare the distributions. This must be done using computer software (STATCrunch) and then imbedded into the summary.
- Compute the boundaries for outliers for each set of data and use them to identify any outliers. (Remember there is lower/upper for both the inner and outer fence.)
- After analyzing’s the data, the group will write a paragraph explaining how they think Pendleton County High School could better assist students in improving their score on the ACT. Use the data summary to support explanation.
- The project must be submitted electronically. Remember to look over the guidelines on how to submit a paper electronically. This project is due on FridayFebruary26, 2016 by 11:59 pm. Projects that are late will receive a 50% penalty.
Your grade will be based upon the following:
