Population Growth Reading

1. To better understand growth, you can watch the video: 7 Billion: How did we grow so fast?

2.Read through the section: Population Growth.

3.Take notes on birth rates and death rates in your GLIN.

4.Then take notes on the Calculating Population Growth section in your GLIN.

5.Finally, answer this question in your GLIN: How do you think migration could affect population growth rates?

  1. Read through the section: Demographic Transition Model with your partners.
  2. As you read, write down any words you think are most important in your GLIN. Try to write down at least 1 – 2 words per paragraph.
  3. Once you are finished reading, use the words that wrote down to help you write a summary of the reading section.

Part 1

  1. Log in to iLearn.
  2. Open up the Presentations folder in Unit 3.
  3. Open the presentation for Lesson 3 PPT Part 1.
  4. Answer the questions on the first slide in your GLIN using complete sentences.
  5. Next, locate PowerPoint Notes at the Station Table. (you can write on these)
  6. Use slides 3 – 17 of the presentation to help answer the questions on the PowerPoint notes.
  7. I recommend going through all the slides before you work on the Notes.
  8. Answer the question to slide 18 in your GLIN.

Part 2

Discuss this question with your group: How do you think the transition through the 4 stages will impact society? Think about each stage, and using information from the source, describe what life will be like in each stage.

  1. Get a half sheet of paper from the back counter.
  2. Title your paper: The 4 stages of Demographic Transition
  3. Put your name, date, and hour in the upper right hand corner.
  4. Write your answer on the half sheet of paper found on the back counter.
  5. Please turn it in when you are finished.

Literacy and Life Expectancy

  1. Write down the definitions for the following terms in your GLIN: literacy rate, life expectancy, standard of living.
  2. Next, read the directions at the top of the handout.
  3. Study the table and discuss it with your partners.
  4. Read through each question and possible answers.
  5. Using complete sentences, answer the questions in your GLIN. Make sure you also note QAR for each question. (Right There, On My Own, Author and Me, Think and Search)

Population Pyramid Notes

  1. Get a copy of the PowerPoint Notes for Lesson 4.
  2. Open the PowerPoint for Lesson 4.
  3. With your partners, go through the PowerPoint and fill in the notes as you go along.
  4. Make sure you are reading the titles of each graph and analyzing the titles for x and y.
  5. Stop at slide 21.
  6. Raise your hand if you have any questions.

Population Pyramid Activity

  1. Log in to iLearn.
  2. Click on the link for the Population Pyramid Website in iLearn.
  3. Where is says, “Select report” choose Population Pyramid Graph.
  4. The year will be 2015.
  5. Pick any country you like.
  6. The click on Submit at the bottom. This will take you to a Population Growth Pyramid.
  7. Draw that pyramid on your graphic organizer.
  8. Hit back and repeat choosing a different country.
