Course Description: Water quality standards are the cornerstone of state, territory, and tribal water quality standards management programs. The Water Quality Standards Academy - Basic Course is a comprehensive and highly structured course that introduces students to all aspects of the water quality standards program, including the interpretation and application of water quality standards regulation; policies and program guidance; the development of water quality criteria; and other facets of the water quality program. This version of the course has been augmented with California-specific content and instructors. It is primarily aimed at those with fewer than six months experience with water quality standards and criteria programs. However, those with more experience will also benefit from the course as a refresher or to round out their knowledge of this subject.

Water Quality Standards Academy

The course is being offered in two formats as follows (register for one or the other, not both):

1¼-Day Executive Summary Course – May 12-13, 2008 - an overview for managers and others with limited time – covering applicability under both state and federal statutes, designation of uses, introduction to water quality criteria/objectives, antidegradation, and implementation programs. The Executive Summary also serves as the introductory portion of the 5-Day Full Course.

5-Day Full Course – May 12-16, 2008 - more in-depth coverage of water quality standards program elements under state and federal law, including use attainability analyses; human health, aquatic life, nutrient and biological criteria; economic considerations; and implementation through monitoring and assessment; NPDES permits, and total maximum daily loads. The full course is intended for staff in water quality standards, permitting, enforcement, and other implementation programs.

Lunch on Day 1, May 12th: An optional box lunch will be available for purchase on Day 1 for $10.00. It is highly recommended that you purchase the box lunch due to the short lunch break of only 45 minutes.
