About this Opportunity

SWIB is seeking a student intern to work with the Legislative and Beneficiary Liaison. This internship will be part-time (10-15 hours per week) from November through May with the possibility of working increased hours next summer. This internship provides an opportunity to work on a variety of legislative issues as well as become familiar with other public policy issues.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to

  • Create a contact list of legislators and other government officials elected in November
  • Create a database to keep track of state and federal legislation that affects SWIB and the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) and maintain the database once bills are introduced in 2011-12
  • Using RiskMetrics database, screen companies with operations in or business connections with Sudan or other countries defined as supporting terrorism; compare SWIB’s holdings to screened list; and establish spreadsheet with holdings information
  • Create a new database about the history of board members
  • Research miscellaneous topics as assigned
  • Research SWIB files and legislative files about issues that affect the agency. This may include SWIB’s authority, social investing issues, reviewing drafting instructions and legislative history, etc.
  • Assist with clerical duties and help with production & distribution of mailings, presentations and miscellaneous tasks as assigned
  • Research current legislative and investment related issues as requested

Candidate Requirements

  • Political Science, Communications, or Public Administration major (junior or senior undergraduate preferred)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States beyond student status
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong research skills using the Internet and published documents
  • Good analytical skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including excel and access
  • Interest or background in public policy or learning the processes used in setting public policy
