Service Squad

Mrs. Carrie Rospino runs our Service Squad Program at Harwood. This program is open to 4th and 5th graders (the number of students depends on how many Service Squad positions are available in a school year). The purpose of Service Squad is to give students an opportunity to help our school community. For example, a student might help in a teacher's classroom, the library, the office, and our lunchroom.

Parents can contact Mrs. Rospino for more information. Students must be role models for the school (reliable, responsible, conscientious).

BOSCH Engineering is Elementary

Project Description

We have been fortunate to receive a grant for the last three years from Bosch Corporation to support science and engineering instruction in our school for third, fourth, and fifth grade students. BOSCH Engineering is Elementary (EiE) is a STEM curricular program that integrates the science students are already learning in elementary school with engineering design.

There are many reasons to introduce children to engineering in elementary school. Engineering projects integrate other disciplines, such as math, science, and Language Arts. It fosters problem-solving skills that are demanded by our state standards. Children are fascinated with building and with taking things apart to see how they work. By encouraging these explorations in elementary school, we can keep these interests alive. Also, engineering and technological literacy are necessary for the 21st century.

Book Club

We are offering the opportunity for students in the 4th and 5th grade to try something new this year. We are starting a book club to be held during lunch once a week for 5-6 weeks. Students who participate will read a portion of a book each week and meet to discuss it in an informal setting. They will be allowed to bring their lunch and eat during this time. Students do not have to be at any certain reading level but do have to commit to reading the assigned sections each week so they can participate fully in the discussion. There is no cost to the students.

Our intention is to foster a love of reading and allow students to discuss literature in a way that may be new to them. They will be encouraged to discuss how the book makes them feel and to explore some of the deeper ideas in the books.

Students will need the permission of their parent/guardian and teacher to sign up. If a large number of students sign up, we will randomly choose a first group and the others will be placed on a waiting list for a second session.

You will need your parent/guardian AND teacher approval to join.
