Stars and Stripes Foundation

History

in 2005, Dan Reeves, Champion shotgun shooter, instructor and coach, and Mark Christianson, U.S. Army Special Forces (Ret.),were compelled to take an active role inhonoring and supporting America’s military personnel who return from duty with transitional needs from both obvious and not-so-obvious injuries.

Dan and Mark decided to combine their shooting skills and experience in managing shooting competitions and range safety with their shooting industry and military network. It was a natural fit for them to put their skillset to usebyplanning safe and fun shooting events for troops and their families, as well as for all shooters wishing to support America’s defenders of our freedoms.

The result is the SASF “Shoot for the Troops” event - a day of clay target shotgun shooting, handgun and rifle shooting, military vehicle displays, and a great American BBQ lunch. Dan and Mark bring“Stars” (celebrated movie, tv, sports, and musical professionals who shoot) together with“Stripes” (all uniformed military personnel, past and present), and add in shooting industry vendors and the shooting public. The Shooter’s entry fee covers gun use, targets, ammunition, and the SASF dog tag. Squads are led through the shooting events by a military leader, as if on a combat mission, to complete the course in time for lunch and announcements of highest scores.

Everyone is a winner, however, foreach SASF event participant takes pride in knowing that through their participation together we are supporting a wounded service person returning from combat, and also promoting the safe sport of shooting.

SASF’s MISSION

The Stars and Stripes Foundation believes those who secure our freedom and defend our country deserve our ongoing support. Our mission is to ensure that all military service members returning from combat are not forgotten.

SASF’s OBJECTIVE

All SASF events are designed to be entertaining and fun, while bringing recognition to, and demonstrating our sincere gratitude for, the sacrifices our service members make for America and our freedoms.

We work all year to plan and manage these fun and enjoyable shooting events to raise funds for SASF programs.

SASF’s PROGRAMS

In the first three years the SASF annual shoot for the troops event raised enough funds to donate several hundred backpacks that were filled with personal items and distributed by the Wounded Warrior Project to returning troops.

In 2008, SASF will hold its third and fourth shoot for the troops events. Through event participationfees paid, and private donations, the SASF missionwill be fulfilled by expanding our programs. We arenow planning outdoor clay target shooting trips at donated public and private shooting venues to give troops and their families a day in the field, away from the new life challenges that they, with their families, face.

SASF Staffing, Governance, Finances

SASF By-Laws provide for a six-member Board of Directors. Dan, Mark and their board members volunteer their time to manage SASF business affairs, along with scores of other volunteers who assist at each shooting event. there are no paid staff members, and the SASF budget is 100% funded from private donations. Many of the services and products for each shooting event are donated, so that virtually all cash donations to SASF are used to directly fund programs that benefit America’s Troops.
