Requirements
The teacher must have a minimum of five years of teaching experience, strong pedagogy, should have professional affiliations and be involved in the community through service or volunteer programs.
The teacher should be exceptionally skilled, dedicated, and inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.
The candidate should have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues and should play an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school.
The award carries with it a number of public appearances; therefore, the nominee should be poised, articulate, and possess the energy to withstand a busy schedule.
The nominee must be committed to serving as a leader in efforts to improve schools, student performance, and the teaching profession in Kansas.
The state nominees must be classroom teachers; however, the district STAR teachers can be licensed professionals covered by the teachers bargaining unit (such as librarians, counselors, school nurses, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists, etc.).
The name of the nominee from each school needs to be submitted to Human Resources by Tuesday, January 23, 2018. A completed Nomination Packet, using the attached forms, needs to be submitted by the Nominee no later than Thursday, February 8, 2018. - Essay Requirement*: Philosophy of Teaching (two double-spaced pages)
-Describe your personal feelings and beliefs about teaching including your own ideas of what makes you an outstanding teacher.
-Describe the rewards you find in teaching.
-Describe how your beliefs about teaching are demonstrated in your personal teaching style.
*Required Format: TWO type written pages; double-spaced, type size must be no smaller than 10 point, margin must be at least one inch at the top. Include essay title, Philosophy of Teachingand your name and date on the first page.
- Recommendation: One letter will be accepted from a Principal, Instructional Coach or Colleague who can speak to your instructional ability, classroom practices and how they positively impact student learning in achieving our mission of becoming one of the top 10 school districts in the nation.
