Updated PSHE & C programme of study being sent to primary schools
Over the next few weeks all Headteachers of primary schools and ESCs will be sent a copy of the updated Hertfordshire Programme of study for PSHE & Citizenship in Primary Schools in Hertfordshire. The only changes to the existing programme are in the lists of resources where new titles have been added.
However there are significant enhancements to the earlier version. This new information has been added and it is quite clear where it has been added and does not replace any other material previously included all of that remains:
v Links to managing the Healthy School Programme in your school
v Links to the SEAL materials (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning, DfES 2005)
v The Drug education programme for CSF
v Updated news on QCA units of work.

CPD Course for Certification of PSHE teachers
There are still vacancies on the DfES and DoH sponsored Certification of PSHE course to be run by Amber Carroll over the next year starting this month. This will be the third time this national course will also be taking place in Hertfordshire and teachers will gain considerably from the experiences of the first two years. Teachers speak highly of the course and the enrichment it has brought to their understanding of PSHE policy and practices and this has impacted very positively on their contributions to their schools.

Free support for schools to set up anti-bullying peer support programmes
We have Children’s Fund financing to support the establishment of sustainable peer support programmes in schools as part of an integrated approach to eliminate bullying. Amber Carroll and former Headteacher Val Biggs (nee Edwards) will provide the training. Training is available for KS2 pupils on setting up Peer mediation and Buddy/Friendship schemes and for KS3-4 pupils Peer mentoring and Peer education schemes. Please let us know about your SRE policies
As part of its drive to support schools with developing their SRE provision the local Teenage Pregnancy Board has asked us to establish whether all schools have updated their SRE policies since the new government advice was published in 2000. We also are requiring information about provision for meeting the needs of pupils who have SEN are from minority ethnic groups and addressing boys’ and girls’ interests and needs A letter requesting this updating will be coming to you soon and we really do appeal to you to take the five minutes to complete the form. PLEASE!!

CSF’s new SRE KS3-4 scheme-of-work due this term
At the end of last year the draft edition of the first CSF scheme-of-work for teaching SRE at KS3-4 was sent for comment to all KS3-4 schools and ESCs and school nurses. The scheme was produced as an important part of Hertfordshire’s Teenage Pregnancy Strategy to help reduce unplanned teenage pregnancies by enhancing schools’ SRE teaching and resources. Before being sent to schools various versions of the draft were agreed by the local Teenage Pregnancy Board. Do look out for it and it will also be published on our website – address at foot of this page.

At last a Subject Association for PSHE
The DfES has recently announced that it is to establish a PSHE Subject Association. This is fantastic news and further clear validation of the importance of the subject, which I know will please many of you who are so committed to this subject. It is expected to provide the following services: creating a support network, keeping teachers up to date, providing guidance and quality control for resources, standardising teaching, providing a national voice and building widespread confidence in PSHE. Watch out for news of developments.

Guidance on teaching and assessing PSHE from QCA
As mentioned previously in this Newsletter we draw your attention once again
to the Assessment materials and end of key stage statements published on the QCA website last November and the new PSHE Units of Work for KS1-4 on the same website: www.qca.org.uk/pshe/ By setting objectives using a shared language pupils can negotiate targets for progression with teachers and participate more fully in their own learning. The end of keys stage statements outline what pupils might be expected to achieve at the end of the key stage. They are based on the non-statutory framework for PSHE and support progression through the key stages.
The new Units of Work cover healthy lifestyles, SRE and financial capability. They include a teacher’s handbook. Units of Work on drug education, which QCA published in 2003 are also available.

New resources
Finding the right resource
We don’t make any recommendations about resources but provide up-to-date information for schools to make their own decisions in line with their own guidance. In the DfES Drugs Guidance for Schools Appendix 4 there is a very useful checklist for schools to consult when choosing resources. It will help schools meet learning outcomes.

New DfES Drugs pack for KS3 due out in June
Look out for this new resource due to be made available to KS3 practitioners from June to promote awareness and understanding of drugs. It will have a particular focus on cannabis. To pre-order a pack phone DfES publication on 0845 60 222 60 quoting 0305-2006BKT-EN.
Spotlight from NCB for updates on books and resources
Spotlight is the National Children’s Bureau reliable and newsy journal. Published several times a year it covers reviews of issues and resources on all aspects of PSHE. The latest edition covers health, children and violence, smoking and much more. Email their bookshop for details: .
Cambridgeshire Personal Development Programme for PSHE, C and Careers
The Cambridgeshire Local Authority, Connexions and secondary schools have collaborated to produce an excellent, new integrated programme that covers the core strands of the ll-16 curriculum for PSHE, Citizenship and Careers. Detailed frameworks offer a progressive model of the developmental needs of students and provide diverse and engaging units of work. All units have learning outcomes at three levels which, with student self-assessment and peer review build to an end of year or key stage assessment plus provision for reporting to parents/carers. Another valuable resource from TACADE: On the booze again
TACADE is a highly regarded and responsible publisher of PSHE and Citizenship resources and its latest production again is of high quality. On the booze again is a teacher’s resource containing 18 sessions with excellent photocopiable handouts. Written for a variety or settings it is aimed primarily at particularly vulnerable young people who are already drinking too much alcohol but can equally be used effectively as part of any school’s planned Drug education programme..

Health in School Conference
