Standard III, objective 1

Activity title: Group Organelle Trading Card

Description: In groups of 3-4, students will the read book-marked web sites about specific a organelle. They will make a “trading card” for the organelle. Thre trading card will feature a picture of the organelle on one side and information about it on the other. The class will exchange trading cards and fill in their data table. These organelles will be compared to a map of the school or the city.

Materials needed: Computers with book-marked web sites. Map of the school, wide plastic tape, student sheet (see below)

Prior knowledge needed: The students will need to know how to use the computers. Mobile Laptop labs work very well.

Time required: Two and one half periods

Special teacher procedures, safety notes, and suggestions: Use a projector to show the students how to use the computers. Give them a student sheet to find put the information onto.

Student sheet or handout (if needed) see following paper.

Scoring Guide: Appropriate use of the time and computers will earn 25 points. Complete information on their organelle 25 points. Presentation of information 25 points. 25 points for taking correct notes while others present. 100 total.


Title: Organelle Report

Introduction: Cell organelles carry out specific jobs. You will be working in groups and researching the jobs of the organelles of a cell. You will make a trading card with information that you will share with the class and compare the organelle to a part of your town.

Procedures:

Making a Trading Card

1. Click on START. Open Microsoft Word from the PROGRAM file.

2. Choose New from the File menu.

3. Choose TABLE, INSERT.

4. Choose 2 columns and 1 row. ACCEPT

5. Select the table on your document with the cursor.

6. Go to TABLE, then table properties.

7. Select BORDERS and SHADING.

8. Pick your style for the border. You can scroll down to see many styles. Click OK

9. place cursor in row on your table and space down 18 returns.

10. Begin to add text and pictures:

Adding Pictures to one side:

1. go to INSERT. Choose Picture.

2. choose “clip art” or “from file”(if you want a picture off the Internet)

3. If you choose “from file”, click on the “search the web” icon on the top bar.

4. type in a topic into the search function

5. find the picture you want.

6. right click on the picture. Choose copy.

7. Go back to your document by choosing it off the bar on the very bottom of your screen.

8. right click and choose paste.

Add Text

1. Your information on the back side of the trading card should include:

a. the name of your organelle

b. a description of what it looks like

c. what it does

d. what part of a city it would be

e. an interesting fact about it.

To finish:

Print several copies of your card and tape them shut. Pass them around the room so others can see the information.
