Department of Medicine
Launceston General Hospital
Launceston, Tasmania

The Department of Medicine at the Launceston General Hospital seeks suitably qualified neurologists to work as part of a group of two or more staff specialists (across 2 FTE), to build a neurology service in the North of Tasmania. This will complement the existing specialist service within the Department of Medicine encompassing a wider range of integrated services including stroke unit, rehabilitation and intensive care unit.

You will join a dedicated team including an EEG scientist, junior medical, nursing and administrative support staff, with access to a range of facilities, including public and private MRI, NC/EMG, and EEG equipment.

As part of the Tasmanian Health Service, the role will include opportunities to work in collaboration with colleagues within associated services including stroke and rehabilitation units, visiting neurologists and other Tasmanian Health Service (THS) sites including the Royal Hobart Hospital. Telemedicine services and video conferencing are available across these other THS sites.

The total catchment population of the Service is 250,000. Launceston General Hospital is a 300 bed tertiary hospital providing a comprehensive range of general and specialist services and associated with the Launceston Clinical School of the University of Tasmania (UTAS) School of Medicine

While this vacancy offers you a diversity of work experiences, it’s not all work and no play. Launceston is a one-hour direct flight from Melbourne or Sydney or 2 hours by road from Hobart. Located in the beautiful Tamar Valley it is well known for its exceptional local produce and food and wine culture. In addition, Launceston enjoys comparatively low real-estate prices and minimal traffic congestion.

The salary package is as per the Tasmanian Salaried Medical Practitioners Agreement (2015), with generous provisions including motor vehicle (or allowance), professional development allowance and leave, mobile phone allowance, laptop, sabbatical leave and long service leave. Opportunities exist for part private practice, with flexibility to break a full time position into one or more fractional appointments for this purpose. Further, teaching and/or research opportunities exist within the UTAS Launceston Clinical School, including the option of a clinical title with the School of Medicine.
