Stacey Junior/Senior

High School Choir

Introduction and philosophy

Welcome to the 2016-2017 Stacey choir program, where I am dedicated to guiding each of you to reach your highest possible level of excellence. My ultimate goal is to instill a life-long appreciation and love of music.

Being a part of the choir is an honor and each of you is expected to serve as a role model for the school. In choir, you will have the opportunity to develop valuable life skills such as positive self-image, time management, confidence, poise, responsibility and teamwork, as well as the musical abilities needed to be a successful musician.

Instructor - Kathy Brock

I’m a native Texan, having grown up in a small town near Ballinger. I received both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree from Angelo State University. I’ve directed several programs in Texas, including band programs in Mertzon, Miles, Grape Creek and Eden and choir programs in San Angelo and Helotes. I have worked closely with the chorus programs in Grape Creek, Lincoln and at Angelo State University. I am a flutist and have performed with the San Angelo Symphony, the San Angelo Community Band, and the Helotes Area Community Band. My students have not only earned honors in both TMEA and ATSSB All-State ensembles, but have consistently earned first divisions on solos and ensembles at the state level.

Choir at Stacey

The Stacey Junior High Choir is comprised of students in grades 6and 7. Students do not need vocal experience to be in this choir. The Stacey High School Choir is made up of students in grades 8 through 12. Some experience in vocal training is preferred for membership in this ensemble, but it is not required. Because performance is such an important part of music, both choirswill participate in several concerts and public performances throughout the year.

Attendance

Because of the importance of each member of the ensemble, attendance is REQUIRED for all rehearsals and performances. Any absence from a concert will affect your choir grade. Absences may be excused in extreme circumstances and should be cleared in advance if at all possible. Grades for EXCUSED absences may be made up at the discretion of the director.

Class materials

Time is precious, so rehearsals will begin promptly. You are expected to be in your seat with your required materials when rehearsals begin. Daily materials include your folder, with all musicand a pencil. IPads should only be brought into the rehearsal area if they are specifically asked for.

Grades

Daily grades are 50% of your total choir grade. This grade includes being on time (unexcused tardies will lower your grade), being prepared (having all class materials) and proper participation during class (working to the best of your ability). The other 50% of your grade will be made up of performances, singing tests and written work.

ALL members of the choirs are required to performin the regularly scheduled concerts. However, maintaining academic eligibility is a necessity because students must be passing all classes to participate in UIL activities.

Conduct and rules

My rules are few and straight-forward. Absolutely NO food, drinks (except water) or gum is allowed in the band hall at any time. Follow directions the first time they are given. Respect others, their property and the property of the school. Behave in a way that will reflect positively on the Stacey Choir program.

Failure to follow any of these rules will result in a verbal reminder for the first offense. Further problems will result in a write up and parent contact. If these actions do not solve the problem, the student will receive a disciplinary referral to the principal, after which they may be removed from the choir program.

Chorus shirts

Stacey Choir members will be asked to purchase a choir shirt, which is to be worn for all concerts (unless otherwise noted). The cost is minimal; however, a fund-raiser will be planned to help off-set the cost for those students who choose to participate.
