MATTHEW 25
Students are invited to join us for this year’s Matthew 25 Program, which will take place immediately following Vacation Bible School, July 20 through 24. Last summer the YFM group assisted many parishioners around Norwood. We will again be planning to do similar work in the parish community. Students wishing to join us should sign up by contacting the YFM Office. Seniors who have minor repair projects and painting should contact Frank Connell or Margaret Hayes to reserve a crew for the summer.
GOSPEL ROAD
For this summer, we are bringing back, and revitalizing a very unique weeklong service program known as Gospel Road. The project will run from Sunday evening, July 26 until Friday afternoon, July 31. This program had great popularity in the Archdiocese years ago and was very popular at St. Timothy’s and St. Catherine’s as well. I am looking for both students and parents who would be interested in assisting with any one of the many aspects of this program. Please contact the YFM Office at 617-792-3433. With the economy still very unstable, and families having to tighten budgets, this is the YFM’s alternative to an out-of-state service trip.
A Multilingual Celebration of Pentecost
On the feast of Pentecost, celebrated 50 days after Easter, we remember the day when the apostles received the gift of the Holy Spirit, the helper whom Jesus promised would come to them. On that day, the original apostles were empowered to speak the message of God in multiple tongues, so that all who were present could understand them in their own language. The gift of tongues is still among us today, represented in the people of our parish who speak a language other than English. On Pentecost, May 31, we would like to honor the heritage of these different cultural groups by presenting our Prayer of the Faithful in different languages. To do so, we need the help of any parishioners who speak a language other than English, either in helping to compose our prayers in that language or by presenting these intentions at Mass. If you speak a language other than English and would like to be involved in this effort, please contact Colleen in the office or e-mail her at . Merci. Gracias. Vielen dank. Obrigado. Dank u. Grazie.

Dear friends—
As I write these few notes for our bulletin we are preparing to celebrate, later this evening, the Sacrament of Confirmation for the young women and men of our parish. I’m most grateful to all those who have helped these young adults reach this important milestone in their lives. I thank in a special way Mr. Frank Connell, the director of our program, as well as the many volunteer teachers and helpers in this program. These young people are very blessed to have such wonderful role models in their lives as their teachers and guides.
This occasion makes me think back to the days of my own Confirmation. It seemed to take place in a much simpler world. No doubt there were problems and difficulties back then, but it seems as if there were less controversial and complex questions at that time.
Today our youth are challenged day in and day out. We all know that the media and popular culture play a huge role in the life of the young. Things that would have shocked us 25 or 30 years ago are hardly noticed today. People’s lives are full of busyness. If we are not careful, the voice of God can be lost in today’s world. If we are not careful, time for Church and other spiritual practices can be squeezed out of our busy lives.
All of us are called by God to bring others to the practice of the faith. The early church grew in numbers because the earliest followers of Christ lived their faith genuinely and then invited others to walk with them in faith. They taught by words, but most of all by example. Faith is not to be kept hidden or practiced for ourselves alone. Faith is to be given to others as the greatest gift of all.
I’ve often said that most of the kids in our parish will not become professional sports figures or Rhodes scholars. Yet so much time these days is devoted to those pursuits. Sadly, God and Church are often put aside because these activities swallow up so much of every day—including Sunday.
I really encourage everyone—parents, grandparents, godparents, older brothers and sisters, the young people who do go to church and have a place for God in their lives; to reach out to other young people and ask them to see if God cannot have a role in their lives, so that He may direct their ways and help them to choose wisely. This is my hope and prayer for all young people and especially for our newly Confirmed members of St. Timothy’s parish.
Fr. Culloty
