The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Being first in the world seems to be a priority. One is recognized as being successful by accumulating as many riches and items as possible, even if you have to step on or over someone to accomplish this goal. Jesus counters this way of thought. To be first; one must be last. To be the greatest; one must be the servant. These are requirements to enter and share eternal glory with Jesus, the Son of God, who came to be the Servant of us all. Jesus models for us what it truly means to be first and the greatest: to be the servant of all and the last of all. May Jesus give us the grace to accomplish this.

Today is Catechetical Sunday and this year the day’s focus is, “Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person.” Our parishes will observe this special day next Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Rosary when those who have been designated to serve this year as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for this ministry. This day gives each of us the opportunity to pray and reflect on the importance of our individual vocation to hand on the Faith and witnessing to the Lord in all we do. As sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father and as members of the one community of Faith, may all of us, today and especially next Sunday, along with our catechists, re-dedicate ourselves to our baptismal commitment to service and witness.

I wish to welcome and thank Father Joseph Zimmerman, O.F.M. who is celebrating Mass today while I am attending the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher meeting in Minneapolis. I appreciate Father Zimmerman’s willingness to be here.
