DIOCESAN NEWS

Aid to the Church in Need is a Pontifical Foundation of the Catholic Church, supporting the Catholic faithful and other Christians where they are persecuted, oppressed or in pastoral need. You can see more at As can be seen in the news reports on television and in print, Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world. To support their work around the world Joseph Dalton will try to replace batteries in watches when you need them replaced. You can put your watch in an envelope with your name and watch repair written on it and either give it Joe directly at Sunday mass at St Patricks Church or leave it in the sacristy. Joseph will try to replace the battery (no guarantees as battery sizes vary considerably) and return it to you with instructions on how to make a donation to Aid to the Church in Need.

Weekend course for engaged couples, as you know our diocesan marriage preparation course is delivered by trained married couples usually over 5 weekly sessions. Some engaged couples prefer a weekend course and there is one planned for Saturday and Sunday November 19th and 20th here at the Pastoral Centre.

This is run by World Wide Marriage Encounter and is only bookable online. ‘An Engaged Encounter weekend will give them precious time together, away from all the distractions of the wedding preparations – a real opportunity for quality time with each other’. To book

Bethlehem Art on sale 29th/30th October after Masses. Bethlehem art, is a statement introduced by the Christian families in and around Bethlehem. Our mission statement is to provide an income for the few Christian families still living in Bethlehem. There are few pilgrims and visitors to the Holy Land and so families have no means of selling their work. The result is that many families are facing great poverty and distress, as this is for many is their main livelihood. The items produced by local craftsmen are individually hand carved from the wood of the olive tree that are common throughout the Holy Land and in particular those which surround my native city of Bethlehem. Many of the trees over 300 years old and many used for the carvings have fallen during the troubles. Since olive wood is one of the hardest woods on earth, the woodcarvings and their detailing require the patience of very skilled craftsmen. God has blessed the craftsmen of Bethlehem with a very special talent. This art of woodcarvings has been practiced for centuries and passed down through generations from father to son. Once the items are carved, they are sanded and coated with a sealant varnish to protect the wood and highlight the grain. There will be no need for oiling or any further treatment, just display it and enjoy its beauty. These items will last a lifetime and can easily be enjoyed by generations to come. I have the honor of representing the families and the craftsmen in my town of Bethlehem and I am proud to bring their carvings here to the United Kingdom for you to enjoy. Every purchase of these carvings will help to support the many Christian families that still in current times live under constant deprivation and conflict.

God never stops wanting our good, even when we sin.…. -- Pope Francis @ Pontifex
