St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin August 30th & 31st, 2014 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

WHO IS PETER?

We are at something of a disadvantage this week, having a separation of seven days between last week’s Gospel reading and this week’s. In Matthew’s Gospel, these two passages follow immediately upon one another. So we don’t realize that, in only a hundred words or so, Jesus has moved from referring to Peter as the rock on which the church will be built to calling him “Satan.” So the point is Jesus founded the church on a “Satan”? Of course not. Jesus Christ founded, and continues to build—through the presence of his Body given to us, the church, by the Spirit of baptism—on human beings. He knows now, as he knew then, our frailness and built-in shortcomings. Today he begins his explanation of what his role as Messiah will mean during his last days in Jerusalem. And poor Peter leaps to the wrong conclusion, as many of us would, and still do. Peter is insistent upon following the conventional religious wisdom, the status quo, the commonly understood view of the Messiah. But it was this very view that Jesus came into this world to subvert.

WHO ARE WE?

The spiritual author C. S. Lewis once wrote, in reflecting on how hard it is to pray for one’s enemies as Christ commanded, that he had particular difficulty praying for people like Stalin or Hitler. This was because he had to come to terms with the fact that the very human failings that made them who they were are also present in each one of us. We can never be sure exactly how or why we are prevented from exercising that degree of evil and hatred; it is only through the grace and will of God that we don’t. All the weakness and ignorance present in Peter today are present in all of us. We could not name one single baptized follower of Christ in whom these mortal failings were not or are not present. It is helpful for us to be alert about this, lest we follow in the way of Peter today and fail to realize that to follow Christ means following him to Jerusalem. It means actively taking up a cross, making our bodies a living sacrifice, as Paul says. It means examining the religious status quo of our day to make sure it is consistent with the sometimes harsh message of Jesus’ good news. And it means making sure that we are more like last week’s Peter, professing faith in Christ revealed to us by God, so we may continue to be strong and sturdy stones on which the church continues to be built.

The Pastor’s Corner

Dear parishioners,

I hope you have had a blessed week! Sometimes I find myself wondering just where the time has gone. So much to do, seemingly all the time in the world to accomplish these tasks and yet I always find the tasks don't get done and the time goes by even faster! As we begin the 22nd week in this season of ordinary time The Lord Jesus reminds us of the demands of our calling as His followers. Deny ourselves, take up the cross and follow Him. That's what He expects of us. Some today suggest that He really does expect anything, He has taken care of everything for us and so we don't need to heed these words. But Jesus Himself tells that to lose ourselves we will find ourselves in Him, we will live. I don't suggest that we should put on sackcloth and sit in ashes, but we are called to a different life, a life where our joy comes from doing just what that. How much time do we waste! How much time do we devote to prayer, acts of kindness, momentsof sharing what we have with those around us. Yes that is what denying ourselves means, then life becomes so much more than we can possibly imagine. God grant us the courage to walk as Christ Jesus.

We are in need of servers for Mass, cantors and people who like to sing, those who play instruments of various kinds and proclaimers of the Scriptures. Prayerfully consider offering your time and talents for the glory and praise of God. Call the office to enlist in the service of The Lord.

I have included a copy of a statement from the Bishops of Indiana concerning the activities of our elected officials in regards to religious freedoms. The implications of these actions are far reaching and open the door for even less freedom of conscience in matters of one's religious faith.

May your days ahead be full of the things that truly matter. Keep up the 'good' work.

Fr. Tully

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 30/31, 2014
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus brings up the topic of the cross to his followers. They would not realize the cross was part of God’s plan and was to be their legacy until after the Resurrection. Today’s followers of Christ recognize they are stewards of his entire legacy, including his cross; that through their mutual sacrifices God’s glory is revealed. They don’t live their life in Christ only when it is convenient for them. They make a decision to take up their cross and carry it, no matter what the cost. What crosses do we bear in order to reveal God’s glory?

Question of the Week

Ordinary Time: For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfold as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Theme: The cross is a way that leads to true life.

Step 1: Listen to the Word: As you listen once again to the familiar parable, what caught your ear in it today?

Step 2: Look into Your Life.

Children: Jesus tells us that we each are called to follow him. What makes it hard for you to follow Jesus?

Youth: In order to follow Jesus, we have to do hard things, and carry our own crosses. Name the cross that you are carrying right now. In what way can you ask Jesus to help you with your cross?

Adult: Jesus gives us the core truth to life and eternal happiness – the cross. Name the cross that you carry. How is it bringing you closer to God?
