St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin August 2nd & 3rd , 2014 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

LISTEN HEEDFULLY

The invitation to come and satisfy our hunger and thirst in Christ offers a great comfort to us who sometimes ache with longing for God or feel emptiness when we want to feel full of God’s love. This longing is God’s gift and call to us to withdraw from all the noise and racket of our lives and our world and pay attention to the quiet voice of God within us. How do we respond to such a loving invitation? By paying attention, by stilling ourselves; not by struggling and striving to make some spiritual experience happen, but just by sitting still and listening for God’s delicate promptings. Our desire for prayer, even if we feel our prayer to be too distracted and ineffective, is effective because the call is from God and our response is a willingness to hear and be fed by God’s holy word to us.

ALL ATE AND WERE SATISFIED

Jesus fed the five thousand men, “not counting women and children” (Matthew 14:21). We can assume, since women were among his most faithful followers and they tend to bring their children with them everywhere, that the women and children outnumbered the men—a vast crowd indeed! Yet how were they fed with five loaves and two fish? Matthew notes that first, “[Jesus] said the blessing” (Matthew 14:19). He gave thanks to God for what was given: an act of thanksgiving that is always transformative. This act of praise and thanks transforms our bread into his body and blood, and conforms us to Christ for the life of the world. The desire for God is a gift that reflects God’s desire for us. It doesn’t matter if we feel that our prayer is ineffective, or if we are comforted or not by our images of God. God is working in us by the gift of that desire, and our will to respond is our consent to God’s call. Come to the water; come to the feast!

The Pastor’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

"Lord, if it is really you ..." This weekend the Scripture offers us three examples of faith in times of uncertainty. The challenge for us is to realize that God does not abandon us, but is with us always. Peter had received proof of Jesus'

Presence and Power, but surrounded by distractions, fear and lack of trust falters. Yet The Lord answers Peter's cry, taking his hand and raising him up above it all. May we trust in what The Lord's nearness and never allow the evil one to cause us to give into doubting what Jesus asks us to do for God's glory.

As schools open and classes resume now would be a good time to give our children something more important than just paper, pens, notebooks backpacks and all the other supplies needed. What could be more important? How about the example of your faith and trust in God! Maybe this would be a good time to teach them or remind them to pray. Maybe a quick blessing before they walk out the door or get out of the car. Especially if it has been a 'rough' morning experience. Wanting the best for your children give them the reminder of the nearness of God, His eagerness to be involved in their lives and the depth of your love for them.

Finally, I want to thank all who have planned and worked to make me feel welcomed at St. Michael's and St Francis'. I hope that our time together on this journey will bring us all grace and and joy. Please pray for me as your pastor for I know that I need God's help on all His work.

God bless you and let's all keep up the 'good' work. Fr. Tully

/ Stewardship
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 2/3, 2014
In today’s Gospel we find an equation the disciples of Jesus couldn’t solve: Five loaves and two fish divided by 5,000- plus people. They failed to recognize Jesus in the equation; that whatever they had to offer, Jesus could take it and bless it and satisfy the hunger of the crowd with it. Good stewards recognize that the Lord can work miracles with the gifts they offer to a hungry and broken world. How often are we willing to offer our gifts in faith, even as insignificant as we think they are, and count on the Lord to do the rest? How often do we count Christ into the equation?
/ Volunteers Needed
To Adopt A Family
Anglo & Latino Family Pair Program
Through Baptism
We Share The Same Family Tree! /

Later in the summer we will begin a program to help Anglos and Latinos to get to know one another. We will be asking families to voluntarily pair up with another family. On a regular basis (weekly) the pairs will be asked to share together in some way. Perhaps attend mass together, have a cookout, go to Charlestown State Park, or simply stop by for a visit. There will occasionally be organized opportunities for the family pares to share with all of those in the program on a parish level. Our goal is to nurture understanding and unity among our parishioners.

RCIA will begin September 16th. In an era of corporate restructuring, try an organization where top management hasn’t changes in 2000 years. “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is an adult convert program. If you know of any adults who might be considering becoming Catholic, invite them to our program. St. Michael and St. Francis work together with St. Paul and St. Joe Hill on the program. This is also a great opportunity for Catholic Adults (18 years or older) to review their faith and/or to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier Sacrament Preparation: A child (grade 1 through high school) must be enrolled and attend Faith Formation classes the YEAR BEFORE and YEAR of receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation.. Baptism of children under school age requires the parents to meet with the pastor before the sacrament is received.

Question of the Week

Ordinary Time: For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfold as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Theme: God answers all of our needs…

Step 1: Listen to the Word: As you listen once again to the familiar parable, what caught your ear in it today?
