Christian Hope in the Coming of the Saviour
As the season of hope, Advent makes us ask: what is it we hope for? Perhaps we hope for a better job, a really good holiday, or time to spend with our family. Some hope for healing from sickness or addiction; others for restoration of broken relationships. In other parts of the world, people hope for an end to war and bloodshed. We look at the plight of refugees fleeing from persecution in the hope of a better life. In various ways, we all hope for peace, forgiveness, liberation, happiness.
However, we need to ask how all these hopes and desires are related to Christian hope in the coming of the Saviour. After all, it is our Christian claim that Christ is the answer to our deepest human longings. He is “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6) who comes to set us free. Do we really believe this? If so, how does it manifest itself in our lives? The first thing we need to say is that Christian hope does not cancel out all other hopes and dreams. The farmer still prays for rain, the student works for success, the sick hope for healing, captives long for freedom, and we all seek improvement in our earthly lot. We may even pray for miracles. However, Christian hope puts all these things in a wider context knowing God is already at work in our lives and world. As Jesus said: “The reign of God is already here among you” (Luke 17:21). How easy it is to place our deepest hopes in the wrong things, such as wealth power or success. This also applies to our hopes for the church at a time of polarized views of right and left. The former sees the “church’s salvation” by retreating into the past; the latter by exaggerated adaptation to the secular world. No doubt, there is much to be learned from both. Yet, the church’s call to holiness requires the different and deeper perspective of radical commitment to Christ who alone is “light of the world” (John 8:12). So, we do not place our deepest hopes in any earthly reality, political system, ideology or doctrine. Nor even in our particular vision of church. Rather, like John the Baptist, we set our hearts on the coming of the Saviour as we again prepare to celebrate his birth at Bethlehem. Let us also celebrate the Saviour’s re-birth in our hearts, homes, churches and world. In the words of Australian poet Kenneth Crotty: “Jesus has to be born afresh in every age.” German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, killed by the Nazis, called Mary’s Magnificat Song a passionate, wild, revolutionary Advent hymn. It occurs in Luke’s Gospel (1:39ff.) when Mary (pregnant with the Christ-child) visits her cousin Elizabeth (pregnant with John the Baptist). These two Jewish peasant women, living under Roman oppression, rejoice in God’s blessings: the promised Saviour is about to be born! Mary then sings of God’s mercy and justice celebrating the power of God and the powerlessness of humankind. This is what Christian hope in the coming of the Saviour inspires.
