EOTHINON 10 TONE 1

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday after the Dormition of the Theotokos

Hieromartyr Myron of Kyzikos; the righteous siblings Eutychios, Eutychian, and Kassiane of Crete; Venerable Alypios the iconographer of the Kiev Caves; Martyrs Paul and Juliana of Ptolemaïs in Palestine; Theodoretos of Solovky, enlightener of the Lapps

For Non-Orthodox Christians

We welcome all people across all ethnicities and religions to pray with us. However, it is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions of Christianity, and therefore, we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and are very pleased that you are with us this morning.

REFRAINS OF THE FIRST ANTIPHON

Shout with joy to God, all the earth, give thanks unto the Lord and call upon His Name. Declare His works among the nations.

(Refrain) Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.

In the city of our God, in His holy mountain, His place hath been made in peace, and His dwelling in Zion. (Refrain)

Glory… Both now… (Refrain)

REFRAINS OF THE SECOND ANTIPHON

The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God.

(Refrain) Save us, O Son of God, Who art risen from the dead; who sing to Thee. Alleluia.

God hath laid her foundation unto eternity. We have thought, O God, of Thy mercy in the midst of Thy people. (Refrain)

The most-high hath hallowed His tabernacle. (Refrain)

Glory… Both now… O, only begotten Son and Word of God…

REFRAINS OF THE THIRD ANTIPHON

Ready is my heart, O God, ready is my heart; I will sing and chant in my glory. What shall I render to the Lord for all that He hath given me? I will receive the cup of salvation, and call upon the Name of the Lord. (Now sing the Apolytikion of the Dormition.)

THE EISODIKON (ENTRANCE HYMN) OF ORDINARY SUNDAYS

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ. Save us, O Son of God, Who art risen from the dead; who sing to Thee. Alleluia.

TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION, IN THE FIRST TONE

While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding thy most pure body, thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. For which cause, the heavenly powers cried aloud unto thee, O giver of life: Glory to thy resurrection, O Christ, Glory to thy kingdom! Glory to thy providence, o thou who alone art the lover of mankind!

In-na l-ha-jar lam-ma khu-ti-ma mi-na l-ya-hud, wa-ja-sa-da-ka t-ta-hir, hu-fi-za mi-na l-jund, qum-ta fi l-yow-mi th-tha-lith, ai-yu-ha l-mu-khal-lis, ma-ni-han, al-a-la-ma l-ha-yah, li-dha-li-ka qu-wa-tu s-sa-ma-wat, ha-ta-fat ilai-ka ya wa-hi-ba l-ha-yah, al-maj-du li-qi-ya-ma-ti-ka ai-yu-ha l-ma-sih, al-maj-du li-mul-kik, al-maj-du li-tad-bi-ri-ka ya mu-hib-ba l-ba-shar wah-dak.

TROPARION OF THE DORMITION, IN THE FIRST TONE

In thy birth giving, O Theotokos, thou hast retained thy virginity, and in falling asleep thou hast not forsaken the world. Thou hast passed to life, being the Mother of Life. Through thine intercession, deliver our souls from death.

TROPARION OF ST JAMES, IN THE FOURTH TONE

O holy JAMES, as a disciple of the Lord, you received the Gospel; as a martyr, you displayed an steadfast will; as a brother of the Lord, you have boldness towards him; as a Hierarch, you have the right of intercession. Intercede, therefore, with Christ God that he may save our souls.

KONTAKION OF THE DORMITION, IN THE SECOND TONE

Neither death nor the tomb could hold the Theotokos. She is always ready to intercede for us, and she is our steady hope and protection. Since she is the Mother of life, Christ who dwelt in her ever-virgin womb lifted her up to life.

THE EPISTLE

Let your mercy, O LORD, be upon us.

Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous! (Psalm 32:22,1)

The reading from saint Paul's first letter to the Corinthians.

(1 Corinthians 4:9-16)

Brethren, God has displayed us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; for we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we grow weary from the work of our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being slandered, we speak words of encouragement. We have become as the rubbish of the world, the scum of all things to this very day. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I admonish you. For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I appeal to you, be imitators of me.

THE GOSPEL

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.

(Matthew 17:14-23)

At that time, a man came to Jesus, kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers terribly, for often he falls into the fire and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear you? Bring him here to Me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him; and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" Jesus said to them, "Because you have no faith. for truly, I say to you, if you have faith, even as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. This kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were traveling together through Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will rise on the third day."
