Dear Parents and Carers,

St Bridget’s have reached 3 flag status.

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to gain our schools third Eco flag. Led by Mrs Hughes, our Eco Committee focused on the themes of re- cycling, biodiversity and protecting the local environment. Thank you to Mrs Hughes for all her hard work.

More Congratulations to St Columba House who won the House of the Term. They gained the most house points for keeping the rules of the school, working hard, and demonstrating both a positive attitude and exemplary behaviour.

Learning this term includes the following themes

Nursery- Musical instruments

Primary 1- Celebrations

Primary 2- Personal safety

Primary 3 - Glasgow

Primary 4- Food and farming around the world.

Primary 5- Scotland – People and Place

Primary 6- Festivals

Primary 7- Coding in computing.

All classes will begin a school wide focus on the theme of Christmas as of December 1st.

Our work on Global Citizenship continues.

We have been working for some time now on the UN Charter of Human Rights with specific emphasis on the rights of the child. Every pupil in school voted for the 3 rights they felt were most important and the winners were…

The right to have a name and to be known by that name.

The right to choose and have friends

The right to have food and water and to be cared for when sick.

These will form the basis of our very own St Bridget’s Charter.

We encourage every child in our school to be involved in the decisions which affect our school family. Each pupil chose a committee to join and we had our first meetings last Friday.

Each committee will meet one Friday each month.

Our committees will focus on

Pupil Council, Health, Fund Raising, Display, ??????????

Gardening Club which will support out playground development.

??????

Reading Power.

We continue to focus on the development of reading skills at all levels.

Thank you to everyone who donated soft furnishings for our cosy reading areas around the school.

We will shortly re- vamp our own library and continue to visit Baillieston Library to encourage reading for enjoyment.

Our half price book fair has been in operation this week. We raised the magnificent sum of

£1,100 , which gives us £350 to spend on books for the school.

If you have any pre-loved books which your child has outgrown, please do not throw them out.

We can always use books in good condition for our class and school libraries.

Maths in action.

Many families have signed up to Sum Dog, which is a great resource for developing maths skills in a fun and active way. Teachers may give a homework task using Sum Dog and can check to see if a pupil has logged on to complete a task.

A huge well done to Connor McKay who came ?????

Sports News

Our fantastic gymnastics team coached by Mrs Reilly performed at the annual Gymfest at the Emirates Stadium recently. Their brand new routine included cartwheels, pyramids and multi person balances .As an added surprise the finale of the routine spelled out the name of our team

St Bridget’s Bendy Bunch.

by means of individual gold letters on the black background of our team costume. ( handmade by Mrs Reilly herself)

Thanks to Mrs Reilly for both her costuming and coaching skills. She was full of praise for her squad and said “We all worked as a team . It was great fun “

Football team……….

Our morning sports clubs continue on Tuesday ( for younger pupils) and Wednesday.

Classes have enjoyed football coaching from the Celtic Foundation: Sport, Move and Learn, and Mrs Hughes offers an after school golf club on Mondays.

After a block of coaching from our dance specialist, our pupils performed at the recent dance festival in St Andrew’s Secondary School. Well done to all for their dedication in attending the sessions and their superb performance.

Technology

Keeping up with all the latest computing innovations, Mr Mc,Mahon was delighted to welcome a large number of families to the recent Digital Homework workshop.

“I’m a Scientist, Get me out of Here” sees Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils putting scientists through their paces through live online chats in which they can ask experts about anything, from climate change to coding.

The aim of the event is to get pupils excited about science. Students see that scientists are normal people, learn that science lessons relate to real life and become more enthused about science.

Myles McKenna, p7b said:- This is a good way to learn because we were finding out about the latest up to date science.

Cara Mc Millan, p7b said:- This is a better way to learn about science because sometimes words can be complicated but the scientists made it easier for us to understand.

Aiden Farrell, p7b:- It was like having a conversation with scientists.

Josh Dede, p7b:- It was great to get the chance to speak to real scientists; we rarely get the chance to do that.

Connor Mc Kay, p7b:- It’s a great way of learning science because you can speak to real life scientists who can give you the right answer straight away.

Ross Henderson, p7b It was exciting and fun.

Jodi Quinn, p7b:- I didn’t only learn from my own questions I learned from reading other people’s questions, ones that I hadn’t thought of.

Spare clothes-

We are always grateful for donations of spare clothes in case a pupil needs changed for any reason. Our supply of trousers, skirts etc is running short, so if you do have any items of school uniform your child has outgrown, we would make good use of them. If your child does borrow some spare clothes, please return them as quickly as possible.

Parent council

Our council was pleased to welcome a few new members at the meeting in November, but would love to see a few more. It has been agreed that parent council meetings will now take place once per term , rather than once per month. The next meeting will take place in the new year and we will inform you of the date beforehand.

That special time of year is fast approaching and we are already busy preparing.

Our nursery class will host 2 separate Christmas performances ( for morning and afternoon children) for their families on Wednesday 7th December. Doors open for the morning performance at 9.30am and for the afternoon performance at 1.30pm.

On Thursday December 8th the senior choir, Primary 3 and Primary 4 will perform at our annual Christmas carol concert. We usually hold this concert in the evening , but due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unable to do so and so this year will now take place in

St Bridget’s Church at 1.15pm.

Tickets for this event will cost £2 and will be available from the school office from

Monday 28th November.

On Friday 9th December, parents and carers are warmly invited to our Christmas Fayre which will be held in the school canteen. Doors open at 1.15pm.

Please note- this session is for adults only. Only those pupils who are manning the stalls will be in the canteen, but pupils themselves will have the opportunity to visit the fayre during the morning of Monday 12th December.

Stalls will include Christmas items, some made by the pupils themselves, tombola, chocolate tombola and a raffle.

We would be very grateful of raffle /tombola prizes as well as donations of sweets and chocolate.

We hope that every child would contribute 1 bar of chocolate or packet of sweets to make our tombola a special success. Any boxes or tubs of chocolates would be much appreciated.

As part of this enterprise, we are offering a service where Christmas tree baubles can be personalised with a name or message. Rather than try and complete these on the day of the fayre, we are offering the service in advance of the day itself.

Baubles in the colours of red, gold, light pink, dark pink, ice blue ( think Elsa blue) or darker blue can be given a name or message for the price of £1.

We also have heart decorations which can be personalised for the price of £1 ???????

Samples of decorations can be viewed via our Twitter account.

Please complete the attached form if you wish to order.

St Bridget’s church will also hold a Christmas Fete on Sunday 4th December after morning Mass.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated

Primary 1 invite families and friends to their Christmas Extravaganza on

Wednesday 14th December at 1.15pm in the school canteen.

Tickets for this event will cost £2 ( which includes refreshments) and will be available from the school office from Monday 28th November. As we have approximately 60 Primary 1 pupils, we must limit tickets to 2 per family.

Please allow pupils to wear red or green clothes or a Christmas jumper. Please do not supply fancy head gear as it becomes difficult to see children in a crowd of antlers, hats or tiaras.

Primary 2 are proud to present It’s a Baby as this year’s Nativity play.

This will take place on Thursday 15th December at 1.15pm in St Bridget’s church.

Tickets for this event will cost £2 and will be available from the school office from

Monday 28th November.

The school will attend the dress rehearsal of the play on Thursday morning and of course will not require a ticket.

M and M Theatre Productions will visit the school on Monday 19th December for a performance of the pantomime Dick Whittington. A separate letter has been sent with more details.

Christmas parties will also take place that day,( with treats provided)) so pupils may come to school wearing party or casual clothes at no extra charge.

We hope a very special guest will visit our younger pupils.- HO HO HO !!!.

The school will attend the 9.30am parish Mass on Tuesday 29th in honour of St Andrew’s feast day which falls on Wednesday 30th.

Primary 3 are delighted to host a visit from Kathleen Ewins who will play some Scottish music on her accordion . Kathleen was a prize winning accompanist in the All Ireland Championships and we are delighted to welcome her to enhance our celebrations.
