Academy Intervention Plan

Protocol for addressing inappropriate behavior in class:

  1. Visual contact or use of proximity
  2. Verbal contact using a positive manner: draw them in, redirect back to task
  3. Address class in general terms
  4. Verbal interaction with specific individual; check for understanding (not in front of class) and identify behavior (privately)
  5. Ask for meeting after class
  6. Use humor when appropriate

Situation doesn’t improve:

  1. Separate student from the class
  2. time out in the hall – set a desk up for the purpose
  3. arrange with another teacher to have the student go there, with a note
  4. Phone call to parent – keep numbers handy to call from class (repeat as needed)
  5. Send to On Campus Intervention, with note requesting appropriate intervention or time of return
  6. Inform counselor of issues; request counselor set up conflict mediation, Student Study Team or other intervention as needed
  7. Meet with teachers/student/parent
  8. Behavior plan to address “How to” for behavioral change

If a student uses their cell phone or other electronic devices in class…..

1st offense – Student loses participation credit: immediate visible consequence

2nd offense- Confiscate device if teacher can do so comfortably, secure it (must be able to lock it up!) and tell student parent must pick it up OR

Send student to OCI w/note to turn in device; parent can pick it up.

If a student needs a time-out…..

Send them to another teacher with whom you have an arrangement. Send a note explaining what the student should do… Or

Send them to OCI- with a note that says “send back to class in 15 minutes”

If the student has an IEP and is having an issue in class (unless it is a safety issue)…

Send them to the Education Specialist. Make sure assignments are adapted.

If a student is high on drugs or alcohol…

Send them to OCI with a referral.

If a student is out of your control (violence, defiance, etc.)

Send them to OCI with a referral.

If a student has an ongoing issue (personal problems)….

Bemail the counselor to explain your concerns and/or submit referral to health center.

  • OCI will hold students sent with referrals until Vice Principal can deal with them.
  • Vice Principal will confer with lead teachers on suspensions, and will refer students to Student Court whenever applicable.
  • When it is appropriate for students to stay out of classes for more than the day of the incident, Vice Principal will work with the Counselor to seek alternative school-based settings except in extreme circumstances.
  • Academy teachers have agreed that a student who needs to be out of a classroom for more than the day of the incident can be placed in the classroom of other Academy teachers with whom they have a relationship for chunks of the day.
