Course: Social Studies 10R

Instructor: Mr. Berman ()

Extra Help: Periods 3, 5 and 8 in the Social Studies office, Period 4 in the Physical Education hallway, Tuesday mornings (7:40-8:08 am) in room 69, and Thursday afternoons (3:15-4:00 pm) in room 69. I am also available by appointment.

Course Description:

Students will study major developments, turning points, and themes in Global History, and draw connections to modern day realities. This course is a continuation of the 9th grade Social Studies curriculum and covers major historical events from the 17th century to the modern day. The course ends with the NY State Regents Exam in Global History and Geography, which covers the 9th and 10th grade curriculum.

Materials Needed:

  • 3-Ring Binder with section dividers (NO spiral/ bound notebooks and folders)
  • Blue or black ink pens and #2 pencils on exam days

Grading Policy:

  • Homework will be given regularly and will be collected and graded (5 points each)
  • All homework assignments will be posted daily on Mr. Berman’s website and the smartboard
  • Late homework will not be accepted unless student was absent the day it was assigned
  • If absent, homework must be made up the next day (one day grace for each day absent)
  • If absent, it is the responsibility of the student to get missed handouts and assignments from other students, the teacher or the website before or after school
  • Exams will be given at the end of each unit (100 points)
  • Exams will consist of multiple choice questions and short response questions
  • Thematic and DBQ Essays will be assigned periodically throughout the course (100 points each)
  • Class Participation is required of all students. Students are expected to arrive on time, contribute to class discussions and group activities, avoid unauthorized use of electronic devices, and demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the curriculum.
  • Extra credit will be available for each marking period. Cutting class and/or plagiarism will make a student ineligible for extra credit.

Unit XII: Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America (past and present)

Any plagiarized (copied) work, including homework and essays, will result in an automatic zero for the assignment, a phone call home, and possibly a parent/guardian meeting with school administration. In addition the student will not have access to extra credit for the quarter.

Academic Integrity
