NOTES FOR PROSPECTIVE AUTHORS AND BOOK PROPOSAL QUESTIONNAIRE

The Society is pleased to receive book proposals from authors/editors for inclusion in the Society’s Research into Higher Education Book Series, co published with Routledge Books.

These notes for authors set out the aims of this series and the steps to be followed by authors in formulating a book proposal for submission to the series.

In support of a book proposal we ask a number of questions about your proposed publication.

Your answers to these questions will help us to consider your book for inclusion in the series and assess its market potential. Please provide as much relevant information as possible and continue your answers on a separate sheet and include attachments where necessary.

Your book proposal will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Prospective authors/editors are encouraged to contact the book series editors prior to final completion of this questionnaire to discuss their book proposal and the fit within the series.

ABOUT THE SRHE/ROUTLEDGE BOOK SERIES

This exciting new series, co-published by the Society for Research into Higher Education and Routledge Books, aims to publish cutting edge research and discourse that reflects the rapidly changing world of higher education, examined in a global context.

Encompassing topics of wide international relevance, the series includes every aspect of the international higher education research agenda, from strategic policy formulation and impact to pragmatic advice on best practice in the field.

The series welcomes submissions for inclusion from single authors, co authors and edited collections. Primary requirements for inclusion in the series are that the work should:

  • be research based, scholarly and well informed
  • have relevance for an international audience
  • meet at least one of the principal aims of the Society; to advance knowledge; to enhance practice; to inform policy.

Prospective authors are encouraged to consult one or both of the Series Editors to discuss their work and prospects for inclusion in the Series at an early stage in formulating plans for a book proposal and before completing and submitting this questionnaire. This will help authors gain an understanding of the scope of the series.

All book proposals put forward formally for inclusion in the SRHE Book Series must be supported by this completed questionnaire. The Series Editors make recommendations to the SRHE Publications Committee and to the Publishers on titles for inclusion in the series. All proposals recommended for inclusion are subject to a process of peer review.

RATIONALE

  1. Why do you think that there is a need for this book?
  1. How long would it remain up-to-date?
  1. Please provide a brief outline of the current international context that makes your proposal pertinent, explaining – for instance - how and why recent changes may make your book more relevant now than ever before.

Please be aware that, in addition to review by specialists in the field, this information is usually circulated to non-specialist marketers who may have little experience of your specific field. It’s therefore helpful if you could include here what you may consider to be basic information.

SYNOPSIS OF PROPOSED CONTENT

  1. Please attach a synopsis to this questionnaire, stating the mission and scope of the book. This should include:
  • an overview of the book and a statement of its aim.
  • a list of chapter headings
  • an abstract of each chapter

5. Please indicate the approximate number of printed pages you envisage, (allowing 400 words per printed page) and state the number of line illustrations, photographs, and tables that would be included. State if (and why) colour would be required.

6. Please provide a soundbite (around 100-150 words) about your book, which could be used on the jacket of the book in order to draw the reader in.

7. Who is the readership for this book, and what background do you expect them to have?

8. Is the book relevant for the student market either at undergraduate or postgraduate level? How would you expect it to be used (e.g. indicate whether main text, recommended reading, library only). Please list courses:

9. How does the suggested content and structure help to make the readership of this book as wide as possible?

10. Does the underlying research contain any practical relevance for teachers/lecturers? How does the proposed book draw out these implications for improved practice?

11. Does your book have international appeal? If you think it does, please state why, and in which countries.

12. Are there special professional groups, scholarly societies, or other organizations (apart from SRHE) that would have a particular interest in your book? Please list them.

13. Please attach a list of competing books, including author(s)/editor(s), publisher, price, and year of publication.

15. If you believe that your book does not have any direct competition, please provide us with information about comparable or similar titles in the field.

16. For each contributor, please provide full contact information, a brief biography, and synopsis of relevant publications.

TIMESCALE

17. Publication to an agreed deadline is fundamental to good publishing. When would you expect to be able to submit a complete manuscript? (Please be realistic.)

POTENTIAL REVIEWERS

18. Please suggest three people (names, postal address and email addresses) from whom we might solicit, in confidence, a review of this proposal. Ensure at least one is based outside your own country.

Please do not suggest anyone who is likely to contribute to the proposed book, anyone who teaches at the same institution as yourself or, if your proposal is based upon your Ph.D. or other postgraduate dissertation, anyone involved in its supervision or assessment.
