Question #13 references offerings provided to K-8 students in Springfield Public Schools. In the schools, music and visual arts are available to all students K-8. All students in grades K-5 receive 60 minutes per week of music instruction and 60 minutes per week of visual arts instruction taught by certified specialists. Thirty-six percent of 5th grade students participate in string orchestra for 60 minutes per week. In middle school, music and visual arts are offered as electives. Ninety-two percent of all current 6th grade students are enrolled in a music (vocal, band, or orchestra) class, 86 percent of all current 7th grades students, and 71 percent of all current eighth grade students are enrolled in music. In visual arts, 72 percent of all current 6th grade students are enrolled, 68 percent of all 7th grade students, and 36 percent of all current eighth grade are enrolled in a visual art class.
In addition, the following community arts experiences are offered city-wide to all Springfield Public Schools students:

• 2nd graders attend the Nutcracker at Little Theatre
• 3rd graders attend Peter and the Wolf at Drury
• 4th graders attend a Springfield Symphony performance
• 4th graders attend a performance at Little Theatre
• 5th Graders attend a planned exhibit at the Art Museum
