HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will be given and graded. In some cases, a pop quiz will be used to determine the comprehension level of the assigned homework. Verbal collaboration on homework is encouraged, however, outright copying and submission of identical homework will not be accepted.

Collaboration on quizzes is never acceptable.

EXAMS: First exam will be around the 5th week of class and the 2nd exam around the 10th week – these exams will be delivered during the class period. The exams may be open book, closed book or a combination of both. The final exam will be during the scheduled finals period. Exams are comprehensive and will include all content up to the designated syllabus week – including all lecture content and classroom discussions, videos, and homework.

Collaboration on exams is never acceptable.

VIDEO MATERIALS - Students must view two video series offered thru AICHE and also videos offered thru the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB). The designated CSB videos will be assigned during class. The videos can be viewed on any computer with an internet link. You will need to be an AICHE member to enroll in the AICHE/SACHE certificate courses – membership in AICHE is provided free for all students but must be renewed annually. These video programs are free to student members.

The two SACHE certificates must be handed in by the 7th week of class to receive credit toward the course grade.

  1. AICHE Video and Certificate: Chemical Process Safety in the Chemical Process Industries

Go to the web site:

You can download the study guide sections prior to viewing the videos. The study guide contains an outline, copies of most figures and tables, space for notes, and additional supporting material. View the video sections as listed on the course outline. When you have completed viewing a video section, take the on-line test. When all sections and tests have been completed fill out the remaining information to earn your certificate. You can use your notes and study guide during the test, and you can stop and restart the test at any time. Print your certificate and give it to me once you have completed the course Please let me know ASAP if you have any problems viewing the videos.

  1. AICHE Video and Certificate: ELA950: SACHE Certificate Program – The Importance of Process Safety.

Go to the web site:

There are three units in this course. Each unit provides technical information followed by a quiz. Once all the units are completed you will need to take an on-line final. Once you pass the final (80% minimum) you can print the course certificate. Please give me a hard copy of this certificate.

  1. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) Videos: Videos to view will be assigned during the course. Go to www.csb.gov and then click on the video room tab near the top of the page.

Course Outline

Course Content: This course is attended to provide a broad overview of the principles and practices used in the Chemical Processing Industry to assess and manage process safety. Both the technical components of Process Safety engineering and the Process Safety management system component will be studied. Practical aspects and challenges related to process safety concepts that occur in industry will be highlighted during the course.
