What is this class about?:
IEP Listening and Speaking 2 is for international students. This class will help you improve your pronunciation, listening and speaking skills through practice. You are expected to participate actively in class, use a computer and work in small groups.
What materials do I need?:
- Pen, pencil and paper
- LSP 2 (from Interactions 1 – selected chaptersISBN: 978-1308-777191) Get a copy at the bookstore (206-934-4678) by Wednesday, April 6. Bring this book to class every day.
- A good English-English ESL dictionary, such as those
published by Cambridge, Collins or Longman.
- Get a NetID, a username and password that you can use to access college computers, at the library or in IB 3303. If you have forgotten your NetID, please bring a picture ID to IB 3303 to reset your account. Write down your NetID.
What will I do and learn in this class?:
1. Listen to/watch various media while taking notes
2. Understand main idea in short conversations or lectures
3. Practice correct pronunciation during in-class discussions and conversations
4. Give oral presentations of 1-5 minutes using Level 2 grammar and vocabulary
5. Tell the difference between questions and statements
6. Ask for clarification or repetition

American Classroom Rules and Expectations:
- Come to class on time and return from breaks on time
- Speak English only in the classroom
- Get everything done during the break. Do not leave the classroom while the class is in session
- Show respect to your classmates and instructor – do not talk over other students or while the instructor is speaking
- Turn assignments in on time. I will accept it one day late -10%, or Monday if due Friday -20%. After that it is a zero.
- Cell phones must be put away in bags or jacket pockets unless you are given permission by the instructor
- Check CANVAS daily for assignments and due dates
- If you don’t actively participate or you don’t do your homework assignments outside of class, you will not pass.
You get 2 points per day for participation. You lose points if:
- you are absent (2pts)
- you are late (1)
- You do not have your hw or book (1)
- If I have to repeatedly ask you to speak English (1)
Participation: This means to ask questions, offer answers, and work with partners or groups. It is very important for you to be prepared and active during each class.
Attendance
Please attend every class and come to class on time. There will be no excused absences. You should read about these rules and more in your Student Handbook.
5 minutes late (3 times) / = One absenceLeave class 30 minutes early / = One absence
Absent 5 times / = IEP Office Warning; your status in danger
Absent 10 times / = Fail this class
Absent 15 times / = I-20 is terminated; can’t return to North for one year.
Homework/Tests
Do all your homework assignments and take all the tests. If you are absent, contact one of your classmates to get the assignment and do the work. Write your classmates details below.

If you miss a test, your score will be zero. You cannot make up a test.
Beware of Plagiarism: Plagiarism means using someone else’s work, ideas, or writing and then saying you created this work. This is not being honest and is considered cheating. Also, it does not help you to improve your language skills. To avoid plagiarism, do not copy the exact words, phrases or sentences that other people have written in books, newspapers, homework, or on the Internet. A plagiarized assignment will get a grade of zero!
Grades: Your grade is based on tests, presentations, homework, attendance and class participation. You must have at least 75% in this class to move up to Level 3.

Writing Help: Visit the Page One Writing Center (HS1636B near cafeteria) to find tutors who can help you with your English reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Electronic Devices: Please leave electronic dictionaries and other devices in your bag. If you want to look up words, use a print dictionary. Please be polite; do not use your cell phone in class without the teacher’s permission.

No-Smoking Policy: You may not smoke on campus.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES, BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS, AND CONSEQUENCES OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
- Bring your textbook every day. Not purchasing your books or not bringing your books to class will hurt your grades and limit your ability to fully participate, learn, and make academic progress in your classes.
Noncompliance: If you come to class three times without your required text, your teacher may ask you to leave the class and not return until you have a textbook. This will count as an absence.
- Cell phones and other electronic devices may only be used during class time with instructor permission. Texting, listening to music, surfing, shopping, and talking on the phone during class is disruptive and considered extremely rude. During a test, no electronic device is allowed on your desk without teacher permission.
Noncompliance: If you use your cell phone three times during a class session without teacher permission, you will be told to leave the class and you will receive an absence for the day.
- Show respect to those around you while in class and on campus. This means the following:
- Do not sleep in class, talk while the teacher or another student is talking, or laugh at/criticize other students when they make mistakes.
- Do not bring food or drinks to class unless your instructor approves it.
- “North Seattle Community College is a ‘no-smoking campus,’ except in designated areas. Smoking is permitted in posted areas only.
Noncompliance: When a teacher has spoken to you about any of the above and you refuse to comply or you comply each time, but then repeat the action three times, you will be asked to leave and you will receive an absence for the day.
