Course Description:
Sports Medicine 2 emphasizes the assessment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Subject matter will include discussion of specific conditions and injuries that may be experienced by individuals participating in athletic activities. In addition, the use of appropriate therapeutic modalities and exercise in the care and rehabilitation of injuries will be examined. Advanced concepts related to the administrative aspects of the sports medicine program will also be covered in this course. Students interested in healthcare careers in athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, exercise physiology, nursing, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and radiology will benefit from this course.
Course Objectives:
- Students will be able to formulate a base of knowledge about the systems of the body.
- Students will be able to evaluate injuries to various parts of the body.
- Students will be able to choose correct treatment options for patients.
- Students will be able to design a rehabilitation program for a specific injury.
- Students will be able to document injury evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Students will be able to recognize various general medical conditions in sports medicine.
- Students will understand the correct and incorrect uses of pharmacological agents.
- Students will develop technical skills associated with sports medicine.
- Students will develop their own policies and procedures for an athletic training facility.
- Students will explore the role of the athletic trainer in promoting health maintenance practices.
- Students will investigate current topics in sports medicine.
- Students will debate legal and ethical issues in sports medicine.
- Students will develop the appropriate communication skills in order to interact in the sports medicine environment.
- Students will survey safety practices in sports medicine and health care.
- Students will study the role of technology in sports medicine.
- Students will research career pathways in sports medicine.

Assignments:
Projects- Throughout the semester you will have one-two major projects. One project will be completed during the first half of the semester and the other during the second half if assigned. More information will be provided when projects are assigned.
Case Studies- Throughout the semester we will have a case study presentation every Wednesday for several weeks. Students will sign up for their presentation day and each student will present twice during the semester. Case study guidelines will be given to each student.
Tests- Most units will be concluded with a unit test. These tests may be written, practical examinations, or a combination of both.
Quizzes- To gage comprehension, short quizzes will be administered throughout each unit.
Reading Guides- Periodically students will be asked to complete short reading guides.
Classwork/Homework- Throughout the course, various types of classwork and homework may be assigned.
Exams- There will be one final exam for this course. It will consist of a combination of written examination and oral practical.
Sports Medicine Portfolio- As part of the Health Science cluster, students will complete a ten part portfolio throughout the semester. This portfolio will reflect the learning and experiences students have acquired throughout their time in the Sports Medicine Program. The portfolio contains several written portions as well as an oral presentation and evidence of their work based learning and community involvement.
Grading Policy:
This course is divided into several units of study. For each unit, students will be assessed by completing tests, quizzes, in class assignments, and out of class assignments. Students will complete one to two major projects, a midterm exam, and a final exam. The final exam will comprise 20% of the final grade. Exemptions will be allowed to seniors in all courses. To qualify for exemption, seniors must have a cumulative grade of at least 93; that is, the final course grade as calculated before the examination is 93 or above.All graded work will be awarded a point value consistent with the level of importance at the time of assignment.
Grades will be calculated using the following formula:
( total points earned / total points possible ) X 100 = grade
Example: ( 940 points earned / 1000 points possible ) X 100 = 94 % = A
Grading Scale:100-93 = A
92-85 = B
84-77 = C
76-70 = D
69 and below = F / Homework-15 %

Missed Assignment Policy:
It is the responsibility of the student to arrange his/her make-up work. This should be done within 3days of the missed class. If you know you will be absent the day an assignment is due, every effort should be made to submit the assignment before the missed class day. Students who miss a project presentation day will be given an alternative assignment. Those who miss a presentation day without prior approval will receive no higher than an 85 on the assignment.
Late Assignment Policy:
All assignments should be completed and turned in on time. Late work will be accepted the next day for half credit. Noassignments will be accepted after the next day. In emergency situations, prior approval from the instructor must be obtained to receive full credit for late work. Emergency situations do not include printer malfunctions, leaving work at home, leaving work in the car, or needing to print from a flash drive or email. To be deemed on time, work must be turned in when it is collected in class or a specified time announced by the instructor; not by the end of the class period or the end of the school day.

Various non-textbook resources will be used throughout the semester. The above schedule is subject to change. Notification of schedule changes will be announced.
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend class regularly. If you do plan to miss class, please speak with me ahead of time so that we can schedule assessments or give you the content we will be covering that day. Students who miss a project presentation day will be given an alternative assignment. As per the South Carolina attendance laws no student can miss more than 6 days in a credit course. If you do miss class, proper documentation should be provided.
School Procedures:
Tardy Sweep- Students who are not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings are “swept” to the front office. In order to return to class, a student must present a legitimate pass from the office.
10/10 Rule- Students are not permitted to leave the classroom during the first or last 10 minutes of class. This is vital instruction time as the teacher is either introducing or concluding the lesson.
