ANIME CLUB

The Anime Club is a place for like-minded people to get together and discuss Anime, Manga, video games, and related hobbies. Activities include hanging-out, group discussions, drawing and reading. The club is open to all students and there are no costs or paperwork involved. Membership is voluntary and students can attend whenever they are available.

CHEF CLUB

School Food and Nutrition Services in conjunction with the Nutrition Program of Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) sponsors “Chef Clubs” in the middle schools of the school division. School food service managers along with VCE staff and master Food Volunteers meet with the students monthly to provide hands on cooking activities to help students develop a love of cooking. Monthly club meetings held in the school kitchen are planned to provide nutrition messages which will promote healthy eating.

CREATIVE WRITING CLUB

The Creative Writing Club will be a year-long club meeting once a week on Thursdays. The objectives of creative writing club are as follows

·  Improved use of descriptive and figurative language

·  Developing writing skills for action scenes

·  Developing natural dialogue

·  Finding students’ own writing “voices”

·  Experimenting with different literary forms and genres

·  Preparing students who wish to apply to Colgan’s creative writing specialty program

·  Publishing a literary magazine

CREW CLUB

The Crew Club is a fall club designed to introduce middle school students, boys and girls, to the sport of rowing. It is a great opportunity for students to be part of a team and still participate in other activities. The Crew Club meets one day per week and students may use the activity bus to go home. The Crew Club is coached by high school rowers who introduce beginning rowers to the ergometer machines, the closest exercise to actual rowing techniques. Participants complete a series of games and challenges designed to teach rowing skills and encourage fitness while receiving one-on-one coaching. Students are required to have an athletic physical and concussion training to participate.

FIELD HOCKEY CLUB

The Field Hockey Club is designed to introduce middle school students to the sport of field hockey. This is a wonderful opportunity for girls who have not already committed to a spring sport and want to be part of a team. Participants meet twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday, and learn basic skills, drills, team building, and game strategies. High school students act as coaches providing one-on-one instruction and help bridge students to the high school competitive teams. Students are required to have an athletic physical and concussion training to participate. Students will need to provide their own mouth guard and shin guards, all other equipment will be provided.

GREEN WOLVES

Our purpose is to help young people that are motivated to learn and act to be part of an environmental club, which gives them a network, resources, and individuals that help them take action, channeling their leadership potential in a learning environment. Students will determine the focus of their club’s ideas in either the fields of eco-initiatives and find overlaps with individual healthy living choices. Some ideas include hosting a school yard clean up, creating waste-free lunch choices, introducing meatless Mondays and Vegetable Viernes, create idle-free zones for drop off and pick up, start a comprehensive recycling program and so much more.

JAZZ/PEP BAND

The Jazz/Pep Band is an auditioned group of 7th and 8th graders which teaches students a new form of music. The Jazz Band requires the students to learn new articulations, phrasing and improvisation. These skills support and extend the instrumental music curriculum for both the county and state. The Jazz Band will perform at two band concerts, the ice cream social and school pep rallies. For the upcoming year, the group will also perform at home football games. For the past three years, the Jazz Band has traveled to King’s Dominion and received good and excellent ratings along with multiple first place trophies.

JOURNALISM CLUB

Students will be provided an outlet to advance their writing skills while creating informational text for our school yearbook. Students will be able to express themselves in a creative environment following all writing processes, i.e., brainstorming, research, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students will connect ideas learned in school with their personal interests to create these stories. Students will also master Office 365 typing skill sets, practice taking journalistic photographs, as well as build on their understanding of debit, credit, profit and loss.

NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY

The National Junior Honor Society was founded in 1929 for the purpose of recognizing academic achievement while developing the ideals of character, service, leadership and citizenship.

National Junior Honor Society members must earn a cumulative seventh or eighth grade academic average of 3.5 at the end of the 3rd quarter of the year, complete the application, receive an overall faculty rating of 3.0 and be approved by the faculty council and the principal.

Members will sponsor the “Back to School Dance,” the Thanksgiving Food Drive (Operation Turkey), the spring induction ceremony, fundraisers, peer tutoring, and a variety of school service projects.

READING CLUB

Grade level book clubs eat lunch in the library once per month to discuss books they are reading, recommend books to other club members, and learn about new books in the library and any special literacy programs being promoted by the library. They assist in planning the book fair and other promotions. We also reinforce social skills such as speaking one at a time, listening to our friends and responding to others in constructive and positive ways.

All students are welcome to join the book blub at any point in the year!

Please be reminded that we have students with severe peanut allergies. Students must have a lunch which contains no peanut or peanut products to participate. This includes candy and candy bars. Bring yourself, your pass, and whatever book you are reading.

ROBOTICS CLUB

SCA

The Student Council Association (SCA) is the student government. Its function is to develop good attitudes of citizenship, to promote training for developing leadership, to initiate and maintain good school spirit and to promote the general welfare of the school.

The Student government is comprised of representatives and alternates from each advisory and an elected Executive Board. This Executive Board will be comprised of five officers and five committee chairs. They will meet during the school day or when called into special session.

The SCA will sponsor different activities during the school year to include dances and fundraising.

THE AWESOME GAMERS (T.A.G.) CLUB

The Game Club is an opportunity for students to socialize and have fun together based on their hobby of playing video and board games. Students will use laptop computers and iPads to play games. Students will have the opportunity to play multi-player games against each other, play single player games, and spend time discussing gaming strategies and preferences in a collaborative environment

WORLD LANGUAGE CLUB

The World Language Club is intended for WLSP & ESOL students but is open to all students. The World Language Club will expose students to various world languages and cultures. Each meeting has a language/culture of discussion. Students will be taught greetings and basic vocabulary in different languages such as French, Spanish, German, Italian, etc. We will also do cultural activities related to particular holidays such as mardi gras, dia de los muertos, etc.

YEARBOOK CLUB

Time: 3:00-4:00 Tuesday and Thursday

If you enjoy taking pictures, attending after school events, and working online in a collaborative environment, the yearbook club might be for you. The club will meet face-to-face after school on the first Thursday of each month and continue to collaborate online throughout the school year. Students must be able to commit to deadlines, attend scheduled events, deliver results, and communicate effectively in an online environment.

Eligibility

Students who maintain appropriate achievement and conduct grades may participate in the various clubs, athletic teams, be a spectator, etc., during the school year. Students may not have more than one “U” in conduct and /or one “F” in achievement. Students who do not maintain the appropriate conduct and achievement grades are ineligible to participate from the time the report card is distributed until the time the next report card is distributed (9 weeks). This also includes trying out for various teams, attending Pep rallies, attending dances, etc.
