Spelling and Word Study Activities

Here are some fun, OPTIONAL activities for practicing spelling words!

  • Measure Up: Students write spelling words and use a ruler to measure them.
  • Color My Word: Students write their spelling words with colored pencils or markers and use a different color for each word.
  • Trace: Students trace around spelling words after they’ve written them, tracing up for tall letters, low for letters that hang below the line on the paper, etc.
  • Rhythm Spelling: Students clap the consonants and snap for the vowels as they spell the word.
  • Pictionary: Illustrate some or all of your words to show what the word means.
  • Dictionary: Put the words in ABC order.
  • Zero In: Write the words and circle the part of the word that you think you’ll have trouble remembering.
  • Storyspelling: Make up a story with your words.
  • Spelling Acrostic: Write acrostics with some of your words that will help you remember their meanings.
  • Spelling Poetry: Write any kind of poem (rhyming, free verse, haiku, etc.) with some or all of your words.
  • Spread the Word: Write as many synonyms for each word as you can think of.
  • Opposites Attract: Write as many antonyms for each word as you can think of.
  • Zelpuz: Scramble the letters for each word. Give the word scramble to anadult to figure out.
  • Dictation Station: Write sentences for each spelling word.
  • Common Bonds: Put your spelling words in categories. Label the categories.
  • Comic Relief: Write riddles or jokes with spelling words as the answers.
  • Clap and spell (high, middle, low) Students clap above their heads for tall letters like t or l, in the middle for short letters like a or m, and bend over and clap for letters with a tail like g or y.
  • Write 3 Times: Students write spelling words once in pencil, then in crayon, then in marker.
  • Dots: Write spelling words with dots and trace over them.
  • Secret Code: Students use symbols to stand for letters and write their words in code. If A= , B= +, C=% the word “cab” would be written in code as %  +.
  • Color My Words: Write spelling words using a different color for each letter per word. Students can repeat a color as long as it’s in a different word.
  • Google Docs: Type your words in a Google Doc. Share it with Ms. Preiser!
