Speech Bubble: Why did the boy run away?

Week 1
I stood outside Mrs Cole’s house.

The gate was hanging from one rusty hinge.

Weeds filled the front garden taller than me.

It was like a jungle from a Tarzan film.

The paint was scraped off the front door, and there was a piece of cardboard where the glass should be.

She was big and red, with straggly hair, a scruffy cardigan, and a great big smile.

Week 1
In the hall there was a pile of dirty washing,

a broken pram,

half a scooter,

a pyjama leg,

and three shoes:

one red,

one brown,

one blue.

Week 1
Gradually he grew more accustomed to the din and the glare and, though he dared not move, began to observe the humans, for numbers of pedestrians passed close by him. They were all walking on the narrow road on which he sat, a road raised above the level of the street itself by about the height of a hedgehog. ‘They’re safe,’ said Max to himself, ‘because the noisy monsters aren’t allowed up here’.

He looked across the street, and could see that at the far side of it there were other humans, also walking safely on a similar raised road.

Week 1

The Great Hall, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone)

Harry had never imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles which were floating in mid-air over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the Hall was another long table where the teachers were sitting… The hundreds of faces staring at them looked like pale lanterns in the flickering candlelight. Dotted here and there among the students, the ghosts shone misty silver. Mainly to avoid all the staring eyes, Harry looked upwards and saw a velvety black ceiling dotted with stars.
