This post offers an exciting opportunity to work with a seven Consultant team in the recently redesigned Geriatric Medicine Service. Activities include working in the Medicine for the Elderly wards, opportunity to contribute to Day Hospital Care, Outpatient Clinics and liaison in other wards.

The job is offered on 10 PA’s per week basis but applications are also welcomed from those candidates who may be interested in working fewer sessions. Although this is not an educationally approved post, you will have the opportunity to meet regularly with a designated Clinical/Educational Supervisor to further your Professional Development and be encouraged to undertake clinical audit or supported research, depending on personal career goals. RoyalAlexandraHospital also has an excellent library and computing facilities and commitment to an on ongoing Postgraduate educational programme.

All applicants must possess full GMC registration, a licence to practice, with at least 4 Years full time Post Graduate Training, two of which must have been in relevant acute specialties or you will demonstrate and evidence equivalent experience and competencies.

The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland – offering many opportunities to ensure job satisfaction and career development.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans to develop a new pattern of Accident & Emergency Services for Glasgow that will see:

  • New rapid access for GP emergency referrals; and
  • Five Minor Injury Units staffed by nurse practitioners under the guidance of Accident & Emergency Consultants at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Southern General Hospital and at the Ambulatory Care Hospitals to be built at Stobhill Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary.

The Acute Division brings together all acute services across the city and Clyde under a single management structure led by the Chief Operating Officer. The RoyalAlexandraHospital is situated in Paisley and serves a population of around 200,000 from a mix of urban and rural areas.

The hospital provides a range of services including inpatient beds, general medical and surgical services, trauma and emergency surgery centre, HDU, medicine for the elderly, maternity hospital including a Community Maternity Unit, Panda Children's Centre and Accident & Emergency.

The hospital also provides outpatients services, day procedures facilities for surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and the majority of maternity services to the population north of the Clyde. The hospital has excellent support facilities, including a modern radiology department, pathology and laboratory services. There is an active postgraduate medical education programme.

  1. WORK OF DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE FOR THE ELDERLY

The Department of Medicine For The Elderly provides a wide range of services for older people in the area.The department works closely with colleagues in the Emergency Care and Medical Services Directorate.

In-Patients activities;

In-patients are based in 6 wards (90 bed Rehabilitation and Assessment, 30 bed Stroke ward, 12 interim care beds and 30 continuing care beds).

Activities include inpatient assessment and rehabilitation of these accepted patients.

Medicine for the Elderly consultants and staff grade doctors provide RAH acute Medical Unit, surgical unit and orthopaedic liaison.

Some selected patients can be admitted to the Medicine for the Elderly unit directly, either from the DayHospital, Out-Patient Clinics, or at the request of a General Practitioner.

DayHospital and Out patients;

The DayHospitalprovides a base for rapid assessment, medical care and rehabilitation for those living at home and support out- patient rehabilitation and early hospital discharge of elderly in- patients

SpecialistFalls, Stroke, Movement Disorder and Fast Track clinic services are based in the DayHospital also. These clinics receive referrals mainly from GP’s and from other consultant colleagues.Out- patient services include active DayHospital functioning five days a week and outpatient clinics including TIA, Falls, General Geriatric, Movement disorder and Fast Track clinics.

Other activities;

The department contributes to the active weekly combined (Medical and Geriatric) post graduate educational program, clinical governance activities and audits.

Speciality doctor (new post) is expected to provide support to both inpatient and out- patient services especially regularly to the rapid access TIA clinic service and contribute to some activities in the Vale of Leven Hospital especially during consultant leave periods and provide support to junior colleagues.

(c)Duties of The Post

(i)The postholder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service. Subject to the provisions of the terms and conditions of Service, the postholder is expected to observe NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Health Board.

(ii)The postholder will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of patients to be able to make contact with the postholder when necessary.

(iii)The postholder is required to comply with GG&C Health and Safety Policies.

(iv)Direct Clinical Care:

  • In-patient care - ward rounds and MDT meeting as part of Consultant team
  • Liaison work- general medicine and other wards
  • DayHospital – assessment and ongoing medical care
  • Out-patient clinics

There are no on-call or out of hours duties required with this post.

Whilst this is not a training post we would be happy to support a suitable candidate who wished to consider specialist accreditation via the CESR route.
