Course Description, Goals and Highlights

This course is offered for those students who speak Spanish and have minimum reading and writing skills. Even though the name of the course is Spanish Speakers 1A/1B, it is the beginning level for Spanish speakers. The curriculum for this course has been designed in such way that it reinforces the listening and speaking skills while introducing/improving the reading, writing and grammatical skills. An emphasis is placed on reading, writing, and basic grammar so that the student is better prepared for the following levels—Spanish Speakers 2A/B , and the Advanced Placement Spanish…AP SP Language.

The curriculum for this course includes some history and cultural awareness about several Spanish Speaking countries, including the United States. This is with the purpose of becoming more aware and gaining knowledge of the culturally diverse Spanish-speaking world to develop insight into the nature of language and culture.

Spiral notebook - Grammar notebook—Journal (where you will keep all of your notes)

2 pencils, 2 red pens, line paper, 2 highlighters, flashcards. Textbook (every day Homework)

Homework

Homework is assigned on a daily basis. It serves to reinforce the day’s lesson.
Homework assignments are due the next school day at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated.Late work will be accepted only when the student had school "qualified" absences.
You should use a "Spanish Folder" (any folder with pockets or prongs) for your hand-outs, quizzes/tests, participation log, and other Spanish related papers. This folder must be kept in excellent condition and it may not contain any material not related to our class. Organization is one of the most important keys to success.

Late Work:

If you miss a day of class please contact myself for another student to learn of the material and assignments you missed. If an assignment was due on the day you were gone you are expected to turn it in to me at the beginning of class of the day you return; by failing to due so you will receive partial credit for that assignment. The assignment for the day you missed should be turned in at the beginning of class the day after you return. Please write ABSENT on all absent work. Also, please write LATE on the top of all late papers.

If you know ahead of time that you will be missing class, please let me know so I can give you the class schedule ahead of time. It is always more difficult to catch up than to plan ahead.

  • Remember: Late work will be counted as ½ credit. That will be fifty percent on that assignment. 50% = F
  • You have one week form your absence to make up tests and quizzes before or after school

Attendance and Participation:

Our class will start on time (as soon as the bell rings) every day. If you arrive after the bell rings you will be considered tardy. In order to complete everything we need to do, it is necessary for everybody to arrive on time and prepared. This is not only a school requirement or out of respect for the teacher, but out of respect for your peers that do arrive on time and prepared.
