Sowe Valley Sports Premium

What is the Sport Premium Funding?

The government has pledged £150 million per annum for each academic year 2013-16 to support PE and school sport in primary schools. The Sport Premium Funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on provision for PE and sport in schools

How is the Sport Premium Funding allocated?

Schools are allocated a lump sum of £8000 and then £5 per child in Years 1-6.

Sowe Valley has received approximately £8500 per year.

How should the Sports Premium Funding be spent?

The government has recommended,

"Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:

  • hire specialist PE teachers/qualified sports coaches to work in primary schools
  • run after-school sports clubs
  • provide teachers with PE resources and training
  • run sports competitions or increase pupils' participation in the School Games." (DFE website)

How will Sowe Valley spend the Sport Premium Funding?

Sustainability

At Sowe Valley we aim to use this money to create a sustainable curriculum for all pupils. Therefore some of the money provided by the funding will be invested in the professional development of staff and as a result should enhance the quality of teaching for all the children. Sports premium money has already been used to employ a curriculum development specialist to provide a new framework for PE activities. As a result, the quality of children's learning and development should be improved.

  • We have employed a specialist PE teacher to work in our school. Di Phillips works all day every Tuesday and runs an after school club to widen the opportunities the pupils have to participate in sport. Due to the expertise of this specialist teacher, all teachers will have the opportunity to develop their teaching of PE and will team teach to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence.
  • A new multi skills course has been developed for KS1 and this will aid the teaching of games and athletics.
  • We have had the opportunity in 2015 of working with Paul Cowie, a FA football coach. He has enabled teachers to develop their understanding of football as well as broaden their knowledge of how to teach games based sports.

Participation

Sowe Valley also aspires to engage as many pupils as possible in extra-curricular activities. Consequently we have used part of the funding to employ outside coaches to run after-school clubs in which pupils can participate. We hope that children will broaden their experiences by participating in these clubs and become more enthusiastic about PE and sport.

  • After school clubs have been additional to teacher led clubs. They have been led by Di Phillips or the Coventry Sports Foundation. These clubs have allowed children to engage and participate in sports, which they would otherwise not have had the opportunity to do so.
  • To increase the competitive opportunities of pupils Sowe Valley will this year investigate participating in the Alan Higgs competition nights. After-school clubs could be tailored to prepare pupils for these competitions.

Excellence

As a result of developing more extra-curricular clubs, we would like children to have the opportunity to complete against other schools in the local area. Therefore we chose to be part of the School Games Competitions in Coventry East. This means that most children will have the opportunity to compete in an inter school competition during the year. We feel that this experience is beneficial to all children and gives them an opportunity to experience how it feels to participate in competitive sport.

  • Sowe Valley has entered a range of School Games competition including KS1 multi skills, KS2 sportshall athletics, KS2 tri golf, and Year 4 quad kids athletics. The school also entered Whitley Abbey Year 5 athletics and the PC O'Brien cross country event. In 2015-16 we hope to increase the number of activities entered.
  • The school organises a very popular sports day. KS1 are supported in their activities by Year 6 pupils. The activities include both competitive events and group challenges.

What impact has the Sport Premium Funding had on PE and school sport?

Measuring the impact of the activities provided with Sports Premium Funding can be achieved through staff questionnaires, pupil questionnaires and pupil voice. These will be used in 2015-16 to assess impact.
