Procedure: Admissions Procedures and Requirements for Nursing Education

A.Scope

To outline admissions procedures and requirements for nursing education.

B.Institutional Regulation

Specific program admission process for the Practical and Associate Degree Nursing programs.

C.Procedure

1. Admissions Procedures and Requirements

a.Complete and submit the college Application for Admission.

b. Complete the pre-entrance examination (ACT minimum composite score of 20 or minimum ACCUPLACER scores ofsentence skills86, reading comprehension 80, arithmetic90. See current “Entrance Requirements”(available on SWCC Web site) to determine how many additional pointswill be awarded.

1)Test must be current within three years.

2)The Admissions Office will reviewapplications in the spring of each year.

2.Prior to enrollment, the following must be on file:

  1. Official and final high school transcripts. Students not completing high school must send a copy of the General Education Development (GED) certificateor High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.
  3. Completion of high school biology and chemistry are highly recommended.
  4. Physician's physical examination report, dental report, TB skin test, and current immunizations as recommended on the nursing physical form. All examinations need to be current yearly. A Southwestern physical form will be sent to the student in their conditional acceptance packet.
  5. A $50.00 deposit by date specified for all accepted or conditionally accepted applicants.

3.Clinical Requirements:

  1. Must pass background check (DCI/DHS) before entering clinical. Check will be completed by the nursing department following admission.
  2. American Heart Association, Health Care Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required for all nursing students before entering clinical.
  3. Flu shot by date specified.

4.Second Year Requirements

a. All admissions procedures and requirements listed above.

  1. Have completed all courses (C or above), including Composition I, Introduction to Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Anatomy & PhysiologyI and II, Nutrition,and Introduction to Sociology.
  2. Submit a copy of current Iowa Practical Nursing License. New graduates must have current Iowa license prior to October 15th.
  3. Have a Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) score on file.

5.Determination of Student Status

a. Files are reviewed during the spring and summer of the year prior to entrance.

  1. Files are reviewedand points awarded based on the current LPN and ADN “Entrance Requirements” sheet. See SWCC Web site for current “Entrance Requirements” sheet. Application points are awarded to determinethemost qualified applicants. Initially points are awarded on the basis of the ACT composite score or ACCUPLACER scores (sentence skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic). Additional points are awarded for completion of arts and sciences courses required for the program prior to enrollment in the LPN program. Points are also awarded for highest current college degree. ADN applicants receive additional points for current core nursing course grade or LPN GPA, if not a current PN student, and HESI score. Alumni points are awarded to SWCC LPN graduates. Date of application to the nursing program is used to settle ranking ties, if necessary.
  2. Students are notified in writing of their admission status* which is based on ranking status from the student’s application points, class size limits and current program capacity.
