II. Legislative Affairs

(a)  Chapter worked with Roanoke Valley Veterans Council to organize a Commonwealth Legislator’s Veterans Update providing a forum for local State Senators and Delegates to discuss veterans’ issues before the January General Assembly. The 25 October event at American Legion Post 3, Salem, included 88 attendees plus three Delegates and one Senator. The Joint Leadership Council’s legislative recommendations for 2017 guided the discussion moderated by a local television personality.

(b)  Chapter President/Leg Rep, Jim Flynn, attended VCOC in Richmond, 5 October.

III. Public Affairs

(a)  Chapter continues to increase use of social media and print media to reach the membership and beyond.

(b)  Chapter participated in 5 Nov Roanoke Veterans Parade and 6 Nov Veterans Celebration, Vinton .

VI. MOST SIGNIFICANT EVENTS OF THE QUARTER

(a)  Chapter with local chapter of AUSA and West Point Society, 1 October, improve the home of a local veteran under the auspices of Renovation Alliance. Chapter provides such support twice annually.

(b)  Chapter luncheon held 20 October at Hidden Valley Country Club, Roanoke, with Major James Baum, Army Public Information, currently President/CEO, Blue Ridge PBS, Roanoke, as guest speaker.

(c)  Smith Mountain Lake satellite chapter held a luncheon on 13 September at Westlake Golf and Country Club with LTC Tracey Carter, USAF (R), Senior Aerospace Instructor, Franklin County High School, as guest speaker.

(d)  Chapter dinner held 17 November, Shenandoah Club, Roanoke, with Gary Francis Powers, Jr. as guest speaker, covering the exploits of his U-2 pilot Dad.

(e)  December 10, Chapter participated in annual wreath laying ceremony, SWVA Veterans Cemetery/Dublin.

(f)  Chapter hosted LTG Dana Atkins, MOAA President and CEO, on 15 December for luncheon at Hidden Valley Country Club which included installation of officers for CY2017.
