XXXV Annual Meeting

Morelia, Mexico

March 14, 2002

Members present - Drs. Janet Adamski, Yolanda Bache Cortés, Ernesto Godoy Dárdano, Coralia Gutiérrez Alvarez, Patrick L. O’Connell, Alberto Julián Pérez, Leticia Reina, Joan Supplee, Lee Daniel, and Beth Willingham.

  1. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Pérez at 1:30 p.m. Drs. Pérez and Reina provided Dr. O’Connell with tentative financial accountings of conference fees collected, and expenses paid out, for this year’s conference.
  2. Drs. Pérez and Reina, in their reports to the Advisory Board, praised one-another’s efforts and those of the many organizations, students volunteers, etc, whose support was invaluable for the smooth running of the conference.
  3. Dr. O’Connell submitted the 2001 annual financial reports to the Advisory Board.
  4. The Advisory Board unanimously approved the awarding of honorary membership status to Drs. Pérez and Reina in recognition of their exemplary service to SCOLAS.
  5. The Advisory Board unanimously approved the appointments of Drs. Debra Andrist (2005), Gutiérrez Alvarez (2004), and Adamski (2003) to the Executive Board; Dr. Supplee (2004) as chair of the Scholarship committee, with Drs. Yolanda Bache Cortés (2003) Jongsoo Lee (2005) as members; and, Dr Peter Linder (2004) as chair of the Harvey L. Johnson Book and Article Award Committee, with Drs. Yanira Paz (2003) and Pierina Beckman (2005) as members. All nominations were ratified at the General Meeting/SCOLAS Luncheon on March 15, 2002.
  6. Dr. Willingham addressed the Advisory Board regarding the official use of the Baylor University website for the purpose of advertising future SCOLAS conferences, scholarships, prizes, etc.. The Executive Board agreed to set up a $500.00/Year budget, to be paid to Ms Linda Conlon at Baylor University, for the cost of maintaining said SCOLAS/Baylor website.
  7. Dr. Lee Daniel will continue serving as Editor of the SCOLAS Bulletin, which Dr. O’Connell will continue to process and mail to SCOLAS members in good standing, with funds provided by the University of North Texas. Dr. Daniel asked that reviews be limited to 250 words. The Bulletin will also be posted on the official SCOLAS/Baylor website.
  8. An homage to Bertie Acker was discussed. Among many ideas to come out of the discussion was to name the SCOLAS scholarship awards in honor of Dr. Acker.

Drs. Willingham and Bache Cortés will organize and administer the 2003 SCOLAS Conference, to be held in New Orleans from March 13-16. Baylor University will sponsor the Conference. The theme for the Conference will be: “Bridging the Gulf: PERSPECTIVAS INTERDISCIPLINARIAS EN AMERICA LATINA
