SOUTH ZONE FEBRUARY 2006 SENIOR HIGH MEETING

Luigi’s Restaurant, Taber

Monday, Feb 13th 10:00 am

The Meeting was called to order at 10:00 am by President Toby Boulet

1. MOVED by Karl Hiebert (Lomond): to adopt the Minutes of the Oct 3, 2005 Meeting in Lethbridge.

SECOND: Terry Hanna (Kate Andrews) CARRIED

2. Voting Strength: 22 . 2 guests also signed-in. 24 of 34 schools were represented.

3. Business arising from last Meeting:

1. Congratulations to INGEBORG POT and DUANE KONYNENBELT, 2005 South Zone Award of Merit recipients.

2. Zone Reception for ASAA 50th Anniversary. Deb Yanota (LCI) reported that she was waiting for quotes from Lethbridge Country Club and Paradise Canyon for the Wine and Cheese Reception for 100 guests. She will also contact Lethbridge Lodge. Prioity will be given to a nice location for the Reception; having the Meeting at the same place would be nice but not necessary. Paradise Canyon has meeting room for about 25; too small for our May Meeting. Marg circulated a list of guests for schools to add to.

4. Communication:

1. Bids to host Provincial Competitions. Bid forms must be submitted to Marg before Apr 1 ASAA deadline.

SAIAC bid to host 2007-08 4A Boys and Girls Basketball. Bid Supported.

FP Walshe bid to host 2006-07 2A Boys Basketball. Bid Supported.

2. Deb Yanota (LCI) encouraged the Zone to initiate bids to host “non-profit making” Provincials in order to reduce travel costs. It was noted that McCoy is hosting Curling this year, LCI is hosting Badminton and next year Kate Andrews is hosting Golf.

5. Financial Statement: MOVED by Deb Yanota (LCI): to accept the financial statement. SECOND: Karen Kusler-Young (Crescent Heights). CARRIED. Outstanding Invoices are expected to be paid.

6. Reports / Information on Zone Competitions:

1. Volleyball –

a. it was noted that there was a wide variance in entry fees; it had been a Zone Recommendation that entry fees be kept down. Marg will compile a summary from Zone Reports and email it to Athletic Directors.

b. nothing has been done regarding 2A entries to Zone VB. Craig Patton (FP Walshe) and Ken Gabruck (St Mary’s) will prepare a proposal for the VB Commissioners.

c. we need to be cautious not to overload areas with Zone VB so that referees are available.

d. what requirements are needed for court size/numbers to host Zones? Refer to ASAA Policy Handbook (page 116)

e. VB Zone hosts should provide well-trained linespeople. Teams should not be asked to supply a player. Adults are preferred over students. Hosts need to inform the Officials that the linespeople are trained.

2. Curling – Zones hosted by St Mary’s at Taber Curling Club. All categories are full, with District play-offs required.

3. Cheerleading – no teams registered this year

4. Wrestling – Zone registrations are 1A/2A Boys (5 schools); 1A/2A Girls (1 school); 3A Boys (1 school); 4A Boys (1 school); 4A Girls (1 school). Supervision was questioned – Wrestling is considered a composite team sport so schools are allowed to have teachers from other member schools supervise their athletes. (Policy Handbook p 43-44)

5. Basketball – Zone banners, medals and team lists were given to hosts. Player registrations will be mailed following the Feb 15 registration deadline. Duane Konynenbelt held a 1A/2A BB meeting following the Zone Meeting.

6. Badminton – there is a Zone date change for Badminton from Wed Apr 26 to Thursday, April 27 due to gym availability. Because of Easter, District entries are needed by Thurs April 13 (before the holidays ). Venues will be Notre Dame (all Seniors), Crescent Heights (all Intermediates), Eagle Butte (Junior Singles) and McCoy (Junior Doubles). Gym co-ordinators are needed for Notre Dame and Crescents Heights (2 sets of 2 people at each venue). Schools are asked to contact Marg if they can help out.

7. Track and Field – Tue May 23 at U of L. District entries to Marg by Fri May 19.

7. Zone Notices of Motion: none received

8. Other Business

1. Golf – 1A schools can have grade 9’s on their team (the entire team can be grade 9’s), but the grade 9’s are not eligible for individual awards. Team alternates (5th player) are expected to play at Zones. Marg will talk to John about this as 5 players on each team results in too many participants at Zones.

2. Football Banners – there was some support for banners; it was felt that medals were not needed. A Notice of Motion will be required. The N of M must include how the banners will be paid for.

3. Rugby. Craig Patton (FP Walshe) reported on the ASAA Rugby Meeting he attended. There will be 2 Tiers at Provincials (2 more banners needed) with schools declaring their Tier by May 1. Zones will be June 5 in Lethbridge. Provincials are June 10. Marg will ask ASAA for more Rugby information.

4. Toby reported on the Zone Disciplinary Meeting held in December. Notices of Motion from that Meeting will be submitted for the May Meeting.

5. Toby gave an update on the Lethbridge Track project. Construction to begin Sept 06 and it is not expected to be ready for Provincials in June 07. Marg reported that Medicine Hat is also building a new all-weather track facility at Crescent Heights for the 2008 AB Summer Games. Construction is expected to begin this Spring and the facility should be ready by Spring 07.
