  1. ‘Why Everyone Should have a Lightbulb Moment’ - Alexa Noble (Utility Warehouse)

Alexa provided an overview of what Utility Warehouse can offer.

They are a FTSE 250 company based in London with a UK Call Centre.

They guarantee you will save money and you can have a cashback card and earn 5% cashback at various retailers.

Alexa explained that 40% of electricity usage comes from lighting. There are ways to manage this such as light sensors, turning off appliances etc. LED lamps can provide a 60-80% cost reduction for businesses and 11% for householders.

There is a 10% reduction in running costs by switching to LED and they last 40x longer.

95% is energy and only 5% lost as heat.

Options for businesses are that they can use an accredited lighting export such as Light Sense Southern. Funding options are available. There is also a 5 year warranty on all Light Sense products. Examples of uses in car parks, office refurbishment etc.

Homeowners will pay approx. £10/bulb. A large variety of bulbs are available.

Utility Warehouse can supply and fit the for FREE!

  1. Towards Zero waste to landfill at Wessex Water (James Peacock – Wessex Water)

James is the Waste Contracts Manager at Wessex Water and leads their goal of becoming the UK’s first zero waste to landfill utility company. James is a chartered waste manager and chartered environmentalist, with a ten year career in all things waste – with spells at the Environment Agency and the Water Research Centre.

Wessex Water have a zero waste to landfill philosophy – ‘By 2020 we will eliminate the landfilling of waste, with an on-going programme to ensure efficient management of waste’

James provided some figures in regard to the landfill diversion statistics they have achieved: 100% of sludge, grits and screenings have been diverted from landfill, 98% soil and stone, 92% construction waste and 85% municipal wastes.

James provided a useful example of the value of reuse. An iphone reused is priced at £2990, the parts are worth £170 and broken down even further into the materials these would only be worth 72p in value.

James provided another example of re-use in practice:

The Summerslade Down scheme is one of six storage tanks being constructed through Wiltshire and Dorset as part of The Grid pipeline scheme. The new storage tank will have a capacity of 8 million litres. In order to help the tank with the surroundings and help minimise its visual impact, it was required to import 40,000 tonnes of bulk fill. Ordinarily this would be achieved with quarried aggregates, but by partnering with a local construction company and importing material with neighbouring Grid schemes, it was possible to achieve this with waste material.

100% of grits and screening are composted at Avonmouth

Wastes are separately collected on site

Wastes are sent to a MRF for further processing

Energy from waste is an option

2 quotes were used to illustrate the issue:

“Zero waste is a wonderful idea but it I cannot see anyway it could ever be achieved."

Doretta Cocks, Campaign for Weekly Waste Collection, 2013

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."

Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977

  1. Converting to LED – the pitfalls and how to avoid them (Led-Zip Lighting - Nick Bainton)

Nick’s background is electronics manufacturing and he moved into the field of LED Lighting design when the industry developed to a point which made it exciting to move into. After 7 years of trading the company is now one of the Dorset’s leading LED lighting designers and suppliers, serving both the domestic and commercial marketplace, staying one step ahead of this fast paced industry.

Nicks provided some examples of projects he has been worked on from their Kinson office and showroom.

Norco at Holten Heath: They are a GRP composite manufacturer. A lighting survey was conducted which showed a random structure, low ceiling and 400w metal halides. Lux levels were recorded and a lighting plan created. They used 150w LED replacements in the same number of fittings.

The LED saved the company over £30,000 with a 28 month payback period. The light levels were doubled.

Other projects have included domestic work and they are also advisors to the Royal parks of London and Buckingham Palace.

The company also manufacture light fittings. They also do work in kitchens, gardens etc.

  1. Climateq - Air-Conditioning and the curse of high energy usage and costs (Sam Flavell)

Climateq specialise in the design & manufacture of low cost energy saving controls for lighting & air conditioning.

Why is air-conditioning such high cost? The cost of the energy to run it is obvious, but is more bad management where the true cost lies. Leaving windows and doors open while it is running, failure to turn it off when the room is not in use, not understanding how to get the best from the equipment is again issues that Sam face when visiting a customer. Companies can try to put better management in place, but in reality this never really works.

For just under £140 the answer is in a surprisingly small, locally designed, engineered and manufactured smart unit, suitable for all types of air-con, including wall mounted.

The system removes the human element of managing your system, automating the process and proving enormous savings to energy and Co2 emissions in the process. Customers include many large retail outlets, British Gas, NHS Trust, Universities and more. They also have a system in the RNLI training gym.

  1. Thermal Savings See the Unseen – Steve Randall and Richard Wallace (Thermal Savings UK)

Richard Wallace presented, along with Director of the business Steve Randall. Richard operates building thermography at Level 3, one of just 200 across Europe with this level of expertise. BREEAM compliant reports are instant, both in what you can visually see during the site visit and in the highly detailed written report which can be produced as a whole and in sections to send to those whose remit it involves. The report will also link with your company CRM system.

The main areas the company work in are:

-Building

-Electrical

-Mechanical

-Oil and gas

-Drones

-Optical gas imaging

-Water leaks

A thermal imaging survey will reveal where your building is leaking energy. The main areas of energy loss include:

  • Displaced insulation around gable and to the right of a roof.
  • Air leakage at soffits.
  • Energy losses through single pane windows.
  • Energy loss through front door.
  • Displaced insulation at soffits and around upper areas of ground floor windows.

Slight temperature variations across a surface can be discovered with visual inspection and non destructive testing with thermography. Heat is indicative of failing components, especially degrading electrical contacts and terminations. Thermography can also be successfully applied to high-speed bearings, fluid couplings, conveyor rollers, and storage tank internal build-up

  1. AOB Date and Venue of next meeting:

Trevor Muddimer provided details of a new free services to help companies and employees to reduce costs. It is called @Work@Home. The service aims to provide companies with a resource efficiency survey and report to help reduce running costs and encourage employees to have a similar free survey for their home too.

The project is lottery funded and covers parts of west and north Dorset.

For further details contact Trevor at

There was then the annual festive quiz!! Prizes were kindly donated by Fudges, Dorset Wildlife Trust, BV Dairy and the RNLI.
