Conic Sections. Project Based Learning.

South Pasadena Review Newspaper. May 25, 2016.

South Pasadena High School’s Advanced Algebra students presented their public artwork at Open House last night with resounding ovation and awe from all. Throngs of South Pasadena residents were in attendance, including parents, little brothers and sisters, students from other classes, faculty, and administration. Celebrities like David Lee Roth, Mike Catherwood, and Edward Furlong were also seen coming and going throughout the event. Alison Brie was seen leaving her alma mater and was heard saying the Advanced Algebra pieces were better than ever before. Students used a graphical browser interface called Desmos to create each of the public artworks. The pieces varied in style, form, color, size, and subject. Many of the pieces drew emotions from all in attendance. Some made us laugh, some made us cry, and others left us in wonder.

The project:

·  You are charged with the creation of one public artwork piece.

·  You will form groups of 2 students but may also work alone. You must fill out the master group signup sheet whether you choose to work in a group or alone. If you are working alone, please cross off the second space.

Throughout this unit on Conic Sections, you will be learning how to use Desmos, a graphical browser interface, to create your artwork piece. We will learn how to enter equations, restrict domain and range, change colors, save graphs, and print.

Your public artwork piece must include

·  at least 75 equations that include

·  at least 20 circles.

·  at least 20 ellipses.

·  at least 15 parabolas.

·  at least 5 hyperbolas.

·  at least 20 restrictions on equations.

·  Creativity, imagination, and ingenuity.

Computers can be checked out in the library and the Desmos app can be used on any iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Android tablet, etc. Groups can save their work by entering your email address into Desmos. Linking with a Google account is the easiest way to save graphs and equations in Desmos. You may not be able to save a graph on the mobile platform.

This assignment is worth 100 points in the Test/Quiz/Project category.

Your public artwork piece will be graded subjectively as follows:

Description of items / Maximum points
20 circles / 20
20 ellipses / 20
15 parabolas / 15
5 hyperbolas / 5
At least 5 other equations / 5
20 restrictions on equations / 10
List of all equations / 0
Title / 0

What do we need to know to complete this project?

Plagiarism will be punished by all methods necessary and consequences will be based on your previous history of plagiarism. Referencing other graphs, equations, designs, and intellectual ideas from any work or author is fine as long as you do not copy or steal their work or ideas. Plagiarism cheapens education. The fair use of ideas and designs in the educational setting must be followed and documented. [Just don’t steal stuff]
