Voting Procedures
Where to vote:
Indiana polls are open from 6AM to 6PM. District designations or boundaries vary for elective offices such as state senators or representatives, county commissioners or county councils, city councils, townships, and school boards. Local precinct polling places are printed in the newspaper. If you don't know your districts or are not sure of your precinct polling place location, call the Voter Registration Office at 235-9521 or go online to www.macoggis.com. You must vote at the correct precinct.
Indiana law requires that polling places and voting machines be accessible to the elderly and disabled. In the past, some County polling places have not met this requirement. If you think your polling place does not comply with State accessibility requirements, contact the St. Joseph County Commissioners at 235-9534 so that changes may be made to make it more accessible. If you wish to file a grievance about your precinct's accessibility, call the Hoosier Voter Hotline at 1-866-461-8683.
How to vote:
Your county election board determines which type of state approved voting system will be used. Instruction posters on how to cast your ballot should be available at your polling place, as well as, the Indiana Voter Bill of Rights. If you are a first time voter who did not register in person, you may be asked to present ID. If you make a mistake while filling in your ballot, don't attempt to correct it. Ask for a new ballot. This will prevent a possible invalid ballot.
Assistance at the Polls:
Precinct judges (one Republican and one Democrat) are available to explain voting procedures. They are required by law to provide such help. If you need assistance to vote, you may ask them for assistance or you may designate someone to help you. That person may not be your employer or union official. They must fill out an Affidavit of Voting Assistance before helping you at the voting booth. No one who assists you may disclose how you voted.
Absentee Voting
Requirements
Indiana voters, registered to vote in the precinct where they live, may vote absentee-in-person at the election board office in the county building in Mishawaka or South Bend, after completing an absentee ballot application. Absentee voting begins 29 days before Election Day from 8:00AM to 4:30PM and ends at noon the day before the election. At least two Saturdays will be open from 8:00AM to 4:00PM.
To vote absentee-by-mail, one of the following conditions must apply:
1. You expect to be absent from the County during voting hours on Election Day.
2. You are disabled.
3. You are 65 or older.
4. You are an election official for a precinct other than you own.
5. You are scheduled to work for the entire 12 hrs. the polls are open.
