IHSA 2012 Season Presidents Report

I would like to start off by thanking our executive and board Nicola Reese, Melissa Oxlad, Claire Wise and all Club delegates, as without these people helping administer the sport we would struggle. I would also like to thank Portfolio directors such as Bill Newbound for C grade, Jenny Oliphant-McGuiness as JC, Ryan O’Handley as CD, RIC Chris Parks and his team of officials, all state coaches and managers and all those who scored and kept time and all of our volunteers throughout the season, including tournaments etc.

Claire and Melissa have served this board well and I thank them for their efforts as they are not continuing on in 2013

Thanks must go out to John Botterill for his help in organising the 2012 ice time requirements for scheduling including national championships etc. As John has left the employment of the Ice Arena, we would like to welcome Craig Hobart as the new Rink Manager and look forward to working alongside Craig. Thanks should also go to the South Australian Ice Sports Federation. IHSA is one of the owner members of SAISF and look forward to improving our somewhat strained relationship with them. We would also like to acknowledge The SAISF for contributions to providing Ice for national tournaments and also the improvisation of policy for development ice time.

2012 was a very busy year. Once again we had a four team Pee Wee league competition with one team being made up of all females. We also continued with 2 Bantam teams; however this age group needs a lot of work as far as numbers go to improve this league. We were also excited to form a novice league with players ranging from 5-9 years olds. Our sincere thanks must go to Jenny Oliphant- McGuiness for her time dedicated to making the season work well, with a few little bumps along the way.

B grade numbers continue to grow. The “B” grade league has remained at eight teams in the competition. This has proven to be possibly the best league for some years now.

The “C” grade league has grown yet again to six teams for 2012. Once again the standard is increasing and the number of players wanting to start at entry level is growing. Bill Newbound is expecting the “C” grade to increase to seven teams for 2013 and possibly more to follow in coming years.

Once again, The Ice Factor has bought some young and talented players into the sport and with our encouragement, will be with us for years to come. IHSA is a proud supporter of Ice Factor and supplies a shield and medals for the end of year tournament.

IHSA hosted three National Tournaments in 2012, the John McCrae- Williamson and Phil Ginsberg Trophy. The level of competition at the Ginsberg / Tange was exceptional, and our players represented us well. The John McCrae-Williamson has now been made in to a Jamboree style event and not as much a competitive tournament. All players from each state loved this experience, so well done to everyone involved. IHSA was also fortunate enough to host a travelling team of 16-18 y/olds from KelownaBC. Thank you to all the host families that billeted the players and officials from the team.

In 2012, IHSA did not have a Defris team as limited numbers. IHSA was represented in the Jim Brown Trophy played at the ice house in Melbourne in October.

For 2013 we will be hosting the Kurt DeFris and the Jim Brown Trophy (Dual Tournament around July) and the John McCrae-Williamson over the June Long weekend.

As for Development side of things as mentioned we are continuing to support the Ice Blast program. Ryan O’Handley has continued on as IHSA Coaching Director, He has been looking at different levels of play and is making good headway in providing courses for coaches and having a helping hand in the development of junior coaching and player development. level 1 coaching courses will once again be on Ryan’s list this year.

Officiating course last season was coordinated by Chris Parks who did a very professional job of RIC and has decided to step back from the role this year. IHSA will be holding more officiating courses again in the near future.

Congratulations must go to Zach Boyle for being selected to the NYT playing in Serbia in March 2013, we wish him well with this fantastic opportunity.

Congratulations and also to Sean Greer, Darren Corstens, Wehebe Darge and David Huxley for being selected to play in the NST in Croatia in April.

Congratulations also to Sari Lehmann, Andrea Steranko and Candice Mitchell on being selected to the NWT playing in New Zealand in April. Candice has been made Captain of the NWT for the trip. Michelle Coonan and Taylor Botterill also deserve mention as they were part of the team up until the last minute. Well done to all the National team representatives from SA
